Having a username similar to an email address
« on: Wed, 12 August 2015, 19:57:57 »
Hey gang,
This has kinda been on the back of my mind and I can't seem to shake it, so I thought I'd ask you guys. Logically I myself can't really see a reason why having e.g. 'GeekHack' for a forum username, and having the associated email address being e.g. geekhack@gmail.com would be potentially a bad thing, but I know I could be wrong on this. I just wanted to hear the opinions of some people who probably know more than I do. Are there security flaws in something like that? Or, even, well... is it frowned upon socially?
Thanks.. I think many of you can guess why I'd be asking haha. Thanks :)

Having the username GeekHack would imply that you were the owner, or at least an administrator,  of this forum.

Having the email address geekhack@gmail.com would probably lead people to think they were contacting a site admin, or a mailing list or group associated with the forum.

Both are examples of a practice called squatting, which is generally regarded throughout the internet as a **** move.

Oh ok, thanks. My bad,  I only meant it as an example, and it could easily be replaced by almost anything. My point in asking was not so much about claiming any ownership of a side, but more about in general having an account user name which matches or is very similar to the corresponding email address that is linked to the account. So it could be anything. Sorry,  I only meant to use geek hack as a quick example,  maybe a better one would be something like: my user name is 'forumuser' and my email is 'forumuser@gmail.com', or user name 'mechanicalkeyboard' email 'mechanicalkeyboard@gmail.com'

Sorry for any confusion. I wasn't trying to imply anything. Thanks for the info though.

Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding. :)

Yeah, I changed my main email address a while back, but if you email my username at gmail.com, it will get to me. Nothing wrong with that.

No worries!
Thanks :)  so no security flaws? Socially acceptable? I just ask because I once saw someone on another forum... Not berated because of it.. But the general impression I took away as an observer of that situation was that you generally 'aren't supposed to do that'.

I've had trouble on deciding a user name for a while now,  and recently created an email just for forums. It then hit me that the name and email I chose are quite similar and I just wondered if this could be a problem.

Sifo, if that were the case then that would be totally meta of you. I would respect that.

I dont think it would be an issue for most people. The only downside I can see to having the same username in several forums (or emails), is that it could make it easier for someone to dox you (or gain more personal information about you)

i could only see it be anoying for a admin or whatever if you were trying to use that handle on a relevent site. nobody is going to care if you make your name on  a unrelevent site, something like Geekhack, or w/e.
but yes. squatting is a **** move.

Ok,  thanks. Could you elaborate more on what you mean by a "relevant site"?

Here's the issue, the username you love and use is saggybottom and you need to tell your friends where to send the dropbox link for the holiday photos.

haha! Oh I see. if I remember correctly the movie 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' had a very interesting business proposition revolving around something similar to this concept.
