I Like 101 Key Layouts. Do you?
« on: Mon, 05 October 2015, 07:39:39 »
I'm curious if there's any others out there like me.

I'm an old fart since I've been using keyboards since before the windows keys and find them completely annoying.  I guess I've been ruined by using IBM Ms all my life, but I do prefer a 101 layout vs the 103/4/5 layouts.  Am I alone in this?

And what I've found is that it's really difficult to find other keyboards (especially newer ones) available in a 101 layout.  Aside from Unicomp's remake of the IBM M, there doesn't seem to be many if any other 101 layouts out there. :(

The vast majority of my keyboards are 101/102. I don't mind at all. I only use windows keys at work to lock my computer quickly (win+L) but because I'm usually using a board without winkeys I just remap F9 to Win and that works. In games, I prefer the 101 layout because alt and ctrl are easier to find and use and you can't accidentally press the winkey.

I also only use Win+L, so only the right windows key gets used. I used to hate the windows key back when they where introduced (I had an original MS Natural Keyboard), but doesn't bother me either way now. Probably took me a good 5 years to get used to it though.

I do think 101 key boards look nicer. 103/4 key boards always looked cluttered to me.

...there might be a few others that agree with you.

I use the left windows key frequently and I prefer a 60% format.

I can appreciate the look of a winkeyless layout, but just like the HHKB I feel like that's wasted space. Also, I use a lot of Windows key shortcuts so I sorely miss it when it's not there.

I've got a couple 101 boards - SGI granite and IBM Model M.  It's okay but I quickly find myself wanting the Windows key on the left side as I do make use of it.  I've also gotten very used to my Ducky's Fn additions and love having an Fn key for volume control (though I do wish it were on the left side rather than right side.  Just shift the space bar over).

What else is you got in 101?  I'm curious to try out a few more 101 designs out there that I don't already have somewhere.

I miss the Windows key occasionally, but I worked around it quite well when I was using my SSK at work (not quite 101 key, but in the same spirit).

Even less often do I miss the Option key when I use such a keyboard on my Mac.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I abuse F5, the left winkey, del/home/end/pgup/pgdn and arrow keys too much to lose them. I use the numpad for a ton of number inputs, too, not just datasheet stuff, although I can live with having a separate numpad that I could move out of the way if I need the space. It's all personal preference.
