Desoldering Trouble: Copper in through-hole ripped out
« on: Wed, 09 September 2015, 01:54:46 »
So I was desoldering my B.Pad because I wanted to change the switches, but the through holes for some of the switches were tiny. This made it really hard to suck the solder out, or even melt the solder for these, so for 2 switches, I kind of forced them out of their sockets with brute force. These two switches kind of ripped out some of the copper from the through-hole. I can tell because there's a bit of the solder on the switch pins, and then some copper on top of this solder, which isn't on the other switches.

My question is, if I change switches and put them in place of the other switches, will the keyboard still run? I tried soldering this switch with the copper back in, and it still works. If I used different switches with clean pins, is it not going to work because it's missing the copper? I'm assuming it should work though, because the solder that's going to go with the new clean switches should fill in any gaps where the copper was ripped out, and complete the circuit?

Hope that was a clear explanation of my problem. Let me know if that needs clarification.

You just need to make sure there’s a solid electrical connection between the switch lead and whatever the pad ultimately connects to. If the pad is busted beyond repair, you can follow the trace along the board, and solder in a little patch wire. If you do some googling around for help with circuit board repair / rework, you should be able to find nice guides, youtube videos, etc. to fix whatever your problem is.

Also, this is the wrong subforum to get useful help with such topics. Try the soldering thread in the 'making stuff together' subforum.
