Looking for a superior high back computer chair
« on: Wed, 23 September 2015, 23:08:43 »
I'm 6'5" 230 lbs. I spend most of my free time at home sitting in front of my computer. my back tends to hurt me after awhile. I'm looking for something comfortable after long periods of time that can support my full back and neck/head. I've been looking at different chairs but can't seem to find anything that's just right. I've been looking at DX Racer King series but I'm always a bit wary of things marketed specifically towards gamers. The thing I like about those [king series] the most is the incredible high back. If anybody has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated :)

I've been looking around for a new office chair with a high back as well. One chair that I like is the Ikea MARKUS chair.

I have heard nothing but bad things about people who use DX Racers for extended periods of time. If you can swing it, Herman Miller makes baller chairs.  I use an Aeron that I love, but it doesn't have a head rest, The Embody is their top end chair, that does have a head rest option.

My problem with the embody is I'm not sure if that back is as tall as I'd like it

I think the best answer for this is to go to a place that sells office equipment and find a chair that is ultra-comfortable for you.  It doesn't matter if it is high or low or round or rectangular....  Don't buy it for looks, buy it for your comfort.
You will know when you find that chair Dan.  Good luck!

Sitmatic has some very nice chairs you may want to look into. I've one at home, and one at work, both very comfortable. Check out the Boss High Back and the Posh Ergo Executive High Back. Both seem like they may be right up your alley.

From the seat cushion to the top of the back measures ~33inches.

I have one of these too!  I'm in front of the computer 12-14hrs a day so a good chair is important to me as well.  However, that being said, the best advice is to go out and try a chair for yourself.  A picture can look good and end up being terrible and vice versa.

Now, if money was not object, then this would be my chair--hands down:
http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/WAP0500080E.html

This is one of the most comfortable seats I've sat in as long as the lumbar support is set right.  I love it in my Boxster.

And if money and brains wasn't an object, then this chair:

Hahaha well both of those are way out of my price range. I'd spend at most $1,000 and that because having good somfort and support is worht about that must to me. No more than a grand at most haha That first one looks really nice though

Out of my price range too!  I've spent less than that on some of my cars.  :D

The Markus is quite nice and does have a really high back.  It's a great value for the money.  We actually have two of them.  If you have an Ikea nearby, go try it out.  They have a few other chairs too that you can try out.

I actually have a DX Racer, but unfortunately went with one of the cheapest models. It's actually a really comfortable chair, even when I would spend like 8 hours straight in it.. and with that said, my back is pretty messed up. I have 3 herniated discs and one torn leaking disc, three bulging discs, kyphosis, three back surgeries, etc.. but my chair is still comfortable to me. Although, I do wish I had gone with a more expensive model. Unfortunately I couldn't spend like $1000 on a Herman Miller... so I went with a DX Racer and don't regret it. I just regret not getting a King or Iron series.

I'm 6'1" so I needed something to accommodate a tall person, which is why I didn't go for the Drifting series (Even though I wanted one because that series has a pink model) and went with the Racing series instead.

As much as I do like my chair, and it's comfortable even with my screwed up spine, IF you DO have the money for a much better chair... I would say go for it. If I had had more money to spend, I'd have gone with a Herman Miller haha. Or at least gone with a higher DX Racer model.

I currently own a Markus. Hurts my back a lot, but is well made.

I am looking to replace it based on my doctor's suggestion that I do so since it it the source of a lot of pain for me. Still a nice chair though, lasted me almost 7 years.

Yea I've been looking at the King series. I've heard a lot of complaints about the lower tier models and IK they would be to small for me. The trouble with the Herman Millers is they really don't make them with backs nearly as tall as I'd like. The tall back on the King series DX Racer is what I like most about it on top of the adjust-ability of the whole chair. Also I too suffer from slight Kyphosis which plays a role in me needing something good for my back. I went from using an old wooden dinner table chair (8 year of this actually) to using a $55 Walmart chair. So I'm finally ready to spend a good chunk of change on a nice chair that will be good for my back. The problem with The Markus chair above for me is that the arms are not adjustable. I like to have my right arm level with my desk for when I use my mouse.

One thing people need to know about chairs:
Everyone uses chairs for the same purpose of sitting.
Why would we need a gaming chair when we want a sitting chair?
I highly doubt this new chair company makes better sitting chairs than those who have done it for years.

Interesting, I also own a markus, had it for a few months now. I am 6ft 3 and it works well, I quite like the lower back support. How tall are you noisy turtle?

Well idc about the "gaming" part, that's just a marketing ploy. As I stated I need something with a high back (is as high or higher than my back while sitting) and adjustable arm rests. That's what makes the difference for me.

6'3 about 270, it mostly hurts my lower back (whetre the spine curves in.) It's a very noticeable searing hot pain that I don't get even from the crap chairs at work. I think it must be pressing directly on a nerve or something, but that's weird since it's something that only started happening the past 4-5 months.

But yeah, the Markus gets me right in the small of the back like I'm being stabbed with a soldering iron in the kidneys.

I only use lock 1-3. 1 and 2 while working and lock 3 for relaxing. Never 4 or 5.

Okay.  You can opt for an expensive "gamer" chair, or maybe just get this:

http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/862387/WorkPro-Belbrook-Executive-Big-Tall-Fabric/

Very comfy.  Can sit for hours on end on them!  I didn't even realize they still made them!

That looks really nice! Again though the back isn't high enough for me and it doesn't appear to have adjustable arm rests :(

You can always get the Maverick.

It's a bit more expensive, but it has more of what you want.

Edit: These chairs are designed for people who have to sit for long periods of time.  I highly recommend them.

The problem with The Markus chair above for me is that the arms are not adjustable. I like to have my right arm level with my desk for when I use my mouse.

So the armrest on the markus shouldn't be a problem as there's only 4 bolts that hold them to the chair.  I'm sure you can figure a way to modify this with a bracket or whatnot to make them the height you want:
