MK84 (MechanicalKeyboards.com first labeled board) hands on
« on: Mon, 14 September 2015, 14:40:01 »
I went to visit mechanicalkeyboards.com today to pick up a FC660C, and while I was there I was able to play with a demo model of the MK84.  This was a sample with Greetech Browns; however, the final will ship with Gateron switches. Before we dig to far into this, let me tell you about the types of keyboards I use on a daily basis.  My primary driver is a HHKB, my second is a KBP V60 Matias Quiet Click. So I like tactile switches, and the only MX type board that I have owned and enjoyed lately was a DAS 4C with Greetech Browns.  Okay Onward.

I can't share who makes this board, but it was well made.  I didn't notice in flex in the case or plate. The feet were nicely wide pads and the flip out feet were covered in the same nice padding.  I didn't have any issue with the board moving while I was typing on it on a tile countertop.

I'm not a backlighting fan so I didn't like that aspect of the board, but it turned off simply and I was pleased with it on the lowest setting as well.  The caps felt nice; however, I think they are ABS. Initially I was taken a bit back by the font, but the more I played with it and typed on it the less I noticed it. In fact, I found some of the symbol fonts to kinda give this board a bit more unique look and appeal after a bit of time.

At $89 this board feels like a great buy for a mechanical board. I'd probably switch the caps over to something I prefer a touch more, but if you like backlighting these are nice caps.

The legends on that keyboard look a lot like the ones on the Royal Kludge RC930 RGB.

I agree, and they are definitely similar to the ones found on backlit Keycools and Noppoo Spyder Lolitas, both of which share an OEM with Royal Kludge (I think).

Gaterons are fine.  My only complaint is they only seem to come in PCB mount, with no plate mount option.

I haven't tried Greentech switches, but I hope to soon with some projects I have in mind.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

If I'm not mistaken, all MX and MX compatible switches are plate mountable. PCB mount switches have an extra piece on them, but can be 'converted' to plate mount by removing the extra tabs.

Gaterons exist in plate mount version, corus kb/amazon switches are plate mount version.
Not that pcb mount switches are a problem to mount with a plate.

Also few people know that black housing and green stems exists for gateron :
