Hi!
« on: Sun, 18 October 2015, 14:49:13 »
Hi Geekhack, I'm RYNEosaurus from North Carolina! I'm pretty active over at /r/mk but I figured I'd check out Geekhack (I've had an account for a while but haven't done anything yet) seems like a cool place! I'm currently typing this on my Ducky Mini with MX Blues and loving it! I'm waiting patiently (not really) for my Tai-Hao Miami keyset to arrive. Going further on my journey through the wonderful world of mechanical keyboards I plan to eventually build a Planck, find a Model M at a thrift store, and one day get a Topre board!

Welcome to GH! What other switches have you tried out (if any?) Is there any switch you really want to try out (Topre?)?

The "Off Topic" "Artisan Services" "Interest Check/Group Buy" sections are really active and worth checking out by the way, outside of the "Keyboard" section!

Thanks! I have a CM switch-tester that has Cherry MX Blues, Reds, Blacks, Greens, Clears, and Browns. I fell in love with Click Clack of Blues. I've tried out the razer and Logitech switches in stores as well, didn't like em as much as Cherry MX Blues. I'd love to try out topre, it seems like it'd be my favorite switch. Unfortunately the price is a bit too high right now as a student, so I probably won't be able to try topre for a while :(
Thanks for the suggestions, I will do that!

Its a good thing to aim for long run, but there is no reason not to enjoy the switches you do have now!

A small pro tip for you: get a cheap plastic key puller if you dont have one and put it on your keys, this way anytime you are out in a thrift store/yard sale/etc. and see a keyboard that you suspect may be mechanical you can pop a switch on the spot, or find out exactly what switch it does have if you know its mechanical! I've found many a good keyboards this way, and it is usually a very cheap way to get a few new keyboards in the collection  ;)

Oh yeah! I love my MX blues!
A wire key puller did come with my ducky mini and a believe a plastic one comes with the Tai Hao keycaps, that's a good idea though, I'm going to start taking it everywhere.

Welcome to Geekhack!

My first two modern mechanical keyboards had (still have, actually) MX blues.  I loved them too ... until I discovered MX greens.

And then I got a Model M (well, two Model Ms tbh).  And all my other keyboards.  I still go back to MX blues every now and again.

eBay is another good place to look for a Model M.  Some of them my look a bit dirty, but nearly every one cleans up really well.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks! sorry for the late reply, still a noob to GH (I just figured out how to receive notifications)

and yeah, I've been keeping my eye out on Ebay, in thrift stores, etc for a Model M, I'd love to try buckling springs.

Soon you will start looking for how to reduce the number of notifications ;)

And once you try Model M, you will want to try Model F!
