Help with Apple Adjustable teensy mod?
« on: Thu, 15 October 2015, 21:46:22 »
Dear GH,
First of all, let me get it out of the way that I'm a new user, I'm still getting used to navigating this site, and I might make some mistakes. Forgive me if this topic has been already covered, or if I'm posting this in the wrong place. Allright!
So recently I've picked up two Apple adjustable keyboards, without any cables, accessories, etc. Since I have a teensy lying around, I was thinking of USB modding one to see how it goes. My issue is that I'm unsure of the solder points for the 1, 3 and 4 points on the controller board. I was told to just find them by trial and error, but I don't want to fry my board  :-\
Here is a picture of the controller board: https://i.imgur.com/YmMPHzw.jpg I've also got the option to pick up some more, so if anyone here is interested in a USB AAK, let me know!
Any help?
Again, sorry if I'm doing this wrong. Let me know if I am!

Can you take a picture of the top of the board? I can try help with the traces if I see it

Edit: If it's similar to the ones that I have worked with before, then the from right to left the pins read 4 3 2 1, ignoring the ground on the far left.

Hi!
Sorry for the late reply. Here's an album of the controller board: http://imgur.com/a/SE9Mn
There isn't much to see on top, other than a (I think) resistor? I hope this is enough to go off of.

I ~think~ that that is the correct pinout for that board, it's difficult to follow the traces due to the graininess and light in the pictures. Worst case, the labeling of the pins that connect to the PCB is backwards. Are you planning on replacing this board with the teensy or are you just going to jump it off those pins?

Thanks so much for spending the time to do that. Unfortunately I've got a bad camera, and I'm not able to take very great pictures. I might, however, be able to get some better pictures taken at work tomorrow. I'm planning to jump off of the points nearest to the left. Also, I'm not sure if this is of great importance, but every single point has a little pin sticking out, except for the 2 and the 4 that you marked on the far left. Does that make a difference? I'll see what I can do. :thumb:

Edit: Also, for reference, the controller is in the correct orientation in the picture above. That's how it sits when properly in place (that side up), so the ADB connector is in the correct position.

Pins 2 and 4 may not be those two that I highlighted on the left. They could be the ones directly above it. At this point, I'm not sure if more picture will help. If you keep the temperature of the soldering iron low, you can try and find the pins without frying anything.

All right. Would you suggest soldering the wires to the pins on the left as I said, or the ones directly off of the ribbon cable at the bottom? Does it matter? It seems a lot easier to do those ones. Regardless, thanks for the help.

Edit: Just took a look at the board, and as you said, the two points above the aforementioned ones have pins.

It doesn't matter, I have done both before.

Perfect! So the bottom pins are numbered correctly for sure? I'll work off of those. Thank you so much for the help again. I'll post an update in a while.

Allright. What do you think would be the best method to test to make sure?

Solder leads to the pin and to the correct ports on the Teensy and then you could solder the leads together and see if it works. If it's wrong, then just cut out the connection and try again.
