Replacing spring/stem on Corsair k70
« on: Sat, 26 December 2015, 23:34:16 »
I have a corsair k70 and recently my x key went bad.
I know i have to desolder but what exactly do i have to desolder? Only the switch i want to open up or all the switches? I've googled and googled some say you have to desolder all the switches wtf and some say you have to desolder the switch to open it up ?!
Also i have a cheap 60 watt soldering iron, is it possible to desolder it witout damaging something?

Generally since the plate doesn't support switch removal you would have to desolder all the switches but it can be done without doing so. I have done it before myself, you will need to desolder the switch and led that is in the switch itself.

Here is a pic from a bare pcb without a switch but the circled pieces is what you will need to desolder.

After you're able to successfully desolder them, try to squeeze a small flathead on the other side between the plate and the switch and pop it out. Sometimes a nice may be better to loosen it as first. Make sure there is no trace of solder left or you could damage the pcb.

Is your soldering iron have temp control by chance? If not 60 watt is a little high but it's doable if you are quick.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions. :thumb:

Another question, if it is that simple why would i have to generally desolder all the switches??

Well technically the plate doesn't support switch top removal so it's not as easy as it could be if it did support it. I have scratched a plate before trying to pop out a switch but you can't really see it when a new switch is in place and the keycaps on. If you did desolder them all then you could easily split apart the plate and pcb and make it much easier to pop out the switches that would need to be replaced, however that takes much longer.

I don't recommend desoldering ALL the switches just to replace one little switch.
