Best head-to-head/1-1/n-n online FPS deathmatch games?
« on: Thu, 24 December 2015, 12:36:07 »
Looking for the best 1-1 (or 3-3, whatever) deathmatch FPS style game to play with my buddy in another state. Haven't played FPS games since the late 90s and for the last decade have only played Forza's and Project Gotham. Looking to rekindle the Quake 2 era and (ideally, but not required) including the ability to make your own environments and whatnot. What is out there now? Anything platform agnostic (I'm on Mac, he's on Windows, etc)? If it comes down to it I can build a Win10 gaming box though.

Not sure about own environments and such, but my two recommendations are Team Fortress 2 and Xonotic.

Alien Arena is based on the Quake engine with many improvements to it. Its fast its free and I think it runs on OSX too. Also has map editors and the rest.
Real men do it with a keyboard.

Having spent too many hours playing Quake 1, I'm inclined to say Quake 1 (well, Quakeworld).

Or Quake Live.. My roots are in Quake and original TF so I am a very biased person towards Quake overall.

Quake Live is excellent, but would need to run in Wine, Crossover, etc for OSX. Plenty of tutorials how to get it running.

Tribes Ascend, Unreal Tournament 4, Rainbow Six Siege.
I recommend these, all very solid FPS games compared to today's standards. Siege being more of a tactical shooter and the rest are old school arena FPS.

There are still a few Quake games going around for 1v1.  CSGO is a solid fps team game.  Try picking it up again if you played any of the older ones.

The original UT99.  No question.  Deck16SE-IV.

Oh hell.  Now I made this picture for my desktop once again.  It is still awesome.

The only true answer
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

UT, Quake Live is fun, it was F2P now you have to pay for it, but its on Steam, so meh.

Tribes. I LOVED that game, i was in the Alpha and paid for Premium, now everything is free, so I'm peeved. They dropped a huge patch a few months ago after they completely dropped the game in support of Smite. Tribes is now an amazing game, but its too late. It has a really high skill ceiling so could be great for 1v1

I was always most partial to HLDM. When you start sailing around the level with the gauss gun and trying to shoot other people flying through the air in 3 axes it turns into some sort of 3d platformer skeet shoot of epic proportions.
