I think this is another of those questions where the answer is do what works for you.  On my two desktop machines I  use RollerMouse Pros, which include both mouse functions (right there in the middle of your keyboard) and palm rests.  I use the palm rests while I type --  lightly touching when I'm typing fast, resting firmly when I'm typing more slowly or pausing.  It works for me -- no pain and I type pretty fast --  and I've been typing on one keyboard or another for 60 years now.  (The RollerMouse is a great alternative to a mouse; the one slight problem is that is costs about as much as a good mech keyboard.)

I love using a wrist rest with my Octagon and I used one for my mouse, but I rest my palms on such rests, not my wrists. I don't use wrist rests for my old vintage boards though.

I would really like to try using a wrist rest. I haven't had the funds or the interest to get one for a little while now but see as more and more seem to be getting reviewed I would love to try one with my new keyboard that I will be getting around christmas time.

For those who have used them what is a good wrist rest that isn't foam. I am looking for a leather one because I hate the texture that the foam ones that I have seen online are being produced with.

As much as I hate the idea of marketing a group buy I am running one for wrist rests for cheap if you wanted to check it out. Its not leather but if you are looking for a time piece of a wrist rest I'd totally recommend Noko's. They are stunning http://store.noko.ca/

+1 for using a wrist wrest to rest your palms on. I have one of the wooden Filco ones and love it.

With wrist rest for me (EK 3-star). Don't really dig "hard" wrist rests, and the cheap ones tend to disintegrate, but a good leather wrist rest does the job nicely. In fact, I even have another leather wrist rest (albeit a much smaller one) integrated into my mousepad, for the times that I use an actual mouse rather than the trackball.
