Hand Painted Red Flakes Type Heaven
« on: Sat, 26 December 2015, 03:34:11 »
Hi Guys,
been a lurker on the forums for sometime and thought I'd share a cool Christmas present project that I embarked on for my girlfriend. She is really big enthusiast and has a collection of mechanical keyboards that dwarfs mine.
Long story short I thought that I would paint her a keyboard for Christmas. She has most topre boards excluding the Type Heaven so I got that for her. For this particular project I decided to go with High Gloss Clear with Red Micro Flakes.

Torn Down:

Wet Sanded:

Primered:

1 Coat of Black:

Red Flakes mixed with Binder + Reduced:

3X Coats of Flake:

High Gloss Clear:

I will now leave it to dry for half a day before I sand it down and airbrush in details before laying down 2 more coats of clear to make the flakes pop!

Wow, great job!  I love watching people work who know what they're doing.

I just finished painting sth and felt like I was stumbling through the dark the whole time.
I'm back.

Excellent :)

Not many people customise Topre keyboards!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Would love to see it! I wouldn't say I know everything there is to painting but I have been painting for work for a number of years

Okay, I have a few more updates thanks for the support and interest in the thread!

So this is after the first coat of High Gloss has cured. The surface isn't super smooth because of the flakes and there isn't depth

So after sanding and airbrushing I have laid on my second coat of clear. It is starting to have a nice mirror reflection now and a some depth (ITS NOT DONE YET) I have placed it on the keyboard for illustration purposes but for Flakes you want to lay on 3 coats of clear minimum for a really nice depth!

After the last coat of clear I'll take it out and post some pictures! My next project will probably be some kind of colourshift, if you guys have any cool ideas let me know!

Because the paint is high gloss will it be easy for the board to attract finger prints and dust like those glossy plastic KB such as razer?

thats a good question! You're not wrong either!
1) Glossy Finishes in general attract prints
2) I used to paint controllers which would be suck if they were fingerprint prone, I use a 4th coat that basically makes the clear super smooth and not attract fingerprints.

Basically having a semi matte finish over the flaky gloss coats or just something like a sealer that would be plain and non textured?
