Teensy 2.0 keyboard with iPhone 6?
« on: Sun, 27 December 2015, 13:06:39 »
This is my first real topic i've ever posted so it is probably not in the correct place. I apologize for that and will try to learn as fast as I can.

I am building my first keyboard with acrylic plates, handwiring with a teensy 2.0, and was wondering what are the chances of an iPhone 6 being able to recognize this with a camera adapter (lightening to female usb, keyboard plugged into this), as well as power this. Looking at the teensy website, it seems like the max power it withdraws is 27 mA? and the iphone seems to be able to power more then that.

I may be not even understanding how this is working, but I am trying to learn as fast as I can and would appreciate the help figuring out of my master plan is going to crash and burn or not haha!

Thanks,
SirCheddar

welcome, it probably belongs in the ' making stuff together' category

I too started with teensy, but went instead withhacking a $20 cheap tiny wireless keyboard meant for tv/media center remote control, as base instead.  It can't be programmed, but it has a tiny circuit board, is battery powered wireless, and can connect to ios, android, pc, mac and linux via the bluetooth and/or usb dongle

Pretty cool idea, really, to have a full sized input device hooked up to a phone when you're home and stationary. I look forward to seeing if you make this happen.

I will definitely follow up. The manufacturer I had produce the plates made a few mistakes so he is reproducing them soon. Here is the look so far

I've used Teensy 2.0 based boards (no LED monsters) with iPad and the 30-pin camera connection kit without a problem.

ATM waiting for the lightning connector version to use them with newer iPads and iPhones. Also ordered this thing: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/5-in-1-HUB-USB-SD-Card-Reader-Lightning-Camera-Connection-Kit-for-iPad-4-for/1828963545.html

It will allow power connection/charging while using stuff on usb. It says, anyway :) Gonna report in later how well all this works.. :)

what does 30-pin camera connection kit's mean?
I purchased a lightening to female usb connector on amazon, and am going to give it a shot when it arrives. and yeah, this keyboard will not have any leds, and only like 70 keys if that makes a difference.

The last time I tried, which was with iPad 3 and iPhone 4s, the iPad could use the KB over the camera connection kit but the iPhone could not. I asked about it at the Apple Store and they said it didn't have the proper software support on the phones. Seemed like a stupid artificial limitation and shortly after I lost interest in trying.

Is it confirmed that the current version of iOS no longer has this issue?

my only proof that it even works is based on ripsters success which he posted about on the reddit for mechanical keyboards. I will update when I receive my lightening to usb female cord, and see how it goes. i really only have a leopold to test atm, as my whitefox is incoming, my varmilo is incoming, and my teensy keyboard is still being assembled tho! ]:

i do think that people have had some easier times with android devices, specifically galaxy tablets, so i am thinking about purchasing a 140 usd galaxy tab4, just to use as a google docs and browsing outlet, especially if it can handle boards easier.

I was able to use a Poker with an Android tablet using an OTG cable, a mini hub, and a small USB battery. Was pretty awesome.

These days I forego all that and I just use the keyboard with my Surface Pro with a lot more functionality.
