What are your favourite keycaps?
« on: Sat, 09 January 2016, 17:53:07 »
Didn't found such a topic here, so I thought I bring it up.

What are your favourite keycap sets (not individual keycaps like artisan caps)?

I start with my favourites: The PBT Dyesub caps on the HHKP Pro 2 are still my favourites (regarding feel), only beaten by the PBT Dyesub Keycaps on the IBM Actionwriter (IBM 6715, its a electronic typewriter), which are sadly only buckling spring compatible (Model M/F for example).

Regarding looks, the Penumbra SA Keycap set is still my all-time favourite, never got the chance to try it out tho ;)

The IBM 6715 typewriter, with its PBT Dyesub keycaps. (Not my image)

Post your favourite(s) here, I'm eager to see what your preferences are :)

Hmmm, this is a really tricky one for me.

1. For me the Penumbra set has a lot of sentimental value, it was the first custom set that I saw and what really brought me into the hobby. It took me 8 good months of searching to finally get my hands on a set, however I'm still waiting for it to arrive.

2. I'd say my GMK Triumph Adler set would've taken the cake with the cherry profile and looks but the light bleed is terrible, I like my boards backlit but I know that others prefer not to so it doesn't affect everybody.

3. My OTD Red Alert is really nice as well, I actually like the feel of DCS other than the slightly annoying bumps on F & J. It comes with a lot of kits and novelties but was quite the expensive set to get.

4. My Granite set I'd say is my least favorite but I love all the options and functionality that you can do with it. I find that DSA sets are best for odd layouts for keycap profiles like the 75% or 96%.

I still have yet to receive my JTK Stormtrooper and GMK Hyperfuse sets yet so I can't comment on those.

I also have this set (just recently acquired it). It's beautiful. Although what's strange is that I prefer the way GMK Red Alert looks over the SP version. GMK's is much more polarizing with its darker modifiers.

Yeah I do like the GMK RA modifiers better but I love the red stripe for the number row.

Cherry dyesubs > Cherry beige doubleshots > Dolch > Realforce PBT > GMK > else

of all the weird SA/DSA sets I've tried Granite is my favorite, then 1976. Modern Seletric *would* have been my favorite but the homing nubs ruined the experience for me.

I am really boring.

Black caps look exceptional, but I'm not so cool and elite to be able to actually use them yet :))

Favorite looking: Round 5 SA.
Favorite feeling: Realforce HiPro.
Favorite to type on: Blank Cherry POM.

FWIW, I use all three of the above nearly every day.

Blanks are the best, but recently I've had to make my keyboard more accessible to people who can't necessarily touch type. Now I just opt for unicorn vomit grab bag layouts

Filco SA set, at the moment.
Feels just great (certainly superior to stock and custom WASD set I had on MJ2 before), but that might change when I manage to score a fully sculpted set - haven't tried that variant yet, so I can't tell if it'll suit me better than Filco uniform (R3).
