About to do my first custom keyboard.
« on: Wed, 13 January 2016, 18:20:37 »
Since I'm relatively new to this forum, I thought i'd share my first "project" with the rest of the Geekhack community, perhaps someone is interested or inspired by this. In the end, isn't this what this forum is all about?

Lets get stated, I'm very happy with my stock HHKB Pro 2 that I am currently using, I got used to the layout and discovered topre switches for myself. But despite all the goodness of the HHKB and Topre switches, there is that one thing that annoys me about these, the lack of custom keycaps and customizability in general.

So the CM novatouch obviously caught my eye, with the cherry MX compatible stems, I'd be able to filially customize and personalise my keyboard.
I'd decided to get a set of Cherry dyesub Keycaps, thick PBT (yes, the rare expensive ones), for the bottom-row of the novatouch I got the blank PBT set of massdrop, since these match the profile and colour of the cherry set I already have.

I also decided to make a custom case for the novatouch to replace its ugly black plastic case it comes with. It will be walnut wooden case, but that's still a work in progress. The case will be a similar design than the wooden cases for the pok3r which are sold on massdrop at the moment.

When its finished I will post some pictures of it here. I will not sell these cases or make another one, I am barely able to make one for my self   :))

Overall the keyboard does look quite retro, I don't have any pictures of it but it will look pretty similar to this pok3r in the wooden case I was talking about. That's also the keycap set I ordered, but in my case these will only be on the bottom row, while anything else will be the cherry PBT dyesub set.

Tell me what you think of my design.

Oh nice. That is nice. Very 70s :D . Although it looks very pristine with the white keys, I wonder how it would look with dark keys such as black (black usually suits wood very well).

Check my keyboard video reviews:

I love white and beige keyboards and avoid black as much as I can, so I don't think I would like it a whole lot. I also don't really know what Keycap set I would get if I decided to make it black, they aren't really a whole lot ISO PBT black keycaps on the marked, I'd need to be ISO since I only get the ISO novatouch for relativity cheap here in Germany, I would actually prefer the ANSI version, but then my cherry set wouldn't fit :))

It'll be interesting to see your progress, if you're planning on keeping us updated. Aren't there already wood cases for the Novatouch though, or am I mistaken?

Also, I was wondering in general about custom cases. If you make a mistake cutting the wood is the case still salvageable or do you toss it out and start over?

If there are actually already wooden cases (or even aluminium ones) that fit the novatouch, please let me know, that would save me a lot of work  :))
I will pretty much just replicate the original case (the inside for that matter), with a few design changes of course, there will also be no adjustable feet.

If I should make a mistake, I will obviously try to correct it if possible, but if its significant, I pretty much have to start from scratch again.
