Ready to start tinkering
« on: Wed, 13 January 2016, 20:13:41 »
Hey everyone. I picked up my first mech board last February. A Das 4 Ultimate with MX Browns. Since then I picked up an identical DAS for my board at the office.

I have been reading up and decided I wanted a board that was good for on the go and decided I am ready to try a 60% board. I just jumped on this DIY kit over on massdrop https://www.massdrop.com/buy/sentraq-60-diy-keyboard-kit as well as this wooden case https://www.massdrop.com/buy/pok3r-wood-case which should make for a nice on the go experience. This will be my first excursion into building a keyboard so I am pretty excited.

I also have been considering the idea of a mechanical "media center" board for my living room. At the moment i have a logitec k400 http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Built-In-Multi-Touch/dp/B005DKZTMG for this duty but thought it would be sweet if I could give this thing mechanical switches. Plus I cant stand the placement of the right shift key so I want to move the physical location of some of the keys around too.

Looking around the internet I see there are plenty of logitec controller hacks so I feel like this is feasible. I'm wondering if anyone has done this before and included the touchpad? I obviously would need a new case to fit the mechanical switches in... I was thinking maybe I could wire it up and use a tkl size plate in a fullsize case and then mount the touchpad where the tenkey would normally go... Anyway, this is a project for the future once I get the first DIY under my belt. But any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Unless you're prepared for a huge amount of work to convert the K400, it might be easier to find a G80-8113 or similar and convert that to Bluetooth.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I don't expect it to be easy, but being a complete noob I am honestly not sure what the actual level of difficulty is with this or doing a bluetooth mod for that matter. I've found a few articles around the web where people have hand wired stuff to logitech controllers so I figured I'd start with trying to mimic those.

I will def check out those Cherry boards you mention though because that looks like almost exactly what I am looking for, minus the wireless.

Either way I am going to build the Sentraq S60-X kit first (whenever it arrives) and then from there re-evaluate this wireless project once I have a better feel for what is involved with building a keyboard.
