Is Trackpoint from T40 or T60 better to put into Ergodox?
« on: Sun, 07 February 2016, 00:06:10 »
I recently purchased an Ergodox EZ from the IndieGoGo campaign. It's given me enough of a thought to try to add a Trackpoint to it. I've pretty heavily researched the work others have done here but still have a couple of remaining questions:

1. Can anyone provide input on whether the T40 or T60 keyboard would be better to rip the Trackpoint components from? I have found both units for purchase from Amazon and the price isn't enough to worry about if one is a clear winner over the other.
2. Is one of the units noticeably more compact than the other? It is very hard to tell from the photos I can find.
3. Is one of the units easier to wire up or get working with the Teensy and Ergodox firmware. If it matters, all the systems I'd use it with run Ubuntu or some form of Linux.
4. Given my modding skill level (Level 0), it looks like the Lenovo/IBM keyboards would be best to use and best documented, but I'm open to other thoughts.
5. If I have to increase the length of the stem to fit it in the case, will that noticeably impact the performance/throw distance of the nub. (in other words, make the Trackpoint too sensitive because of the increase lever length of the stem)

My first post of GH so go easy on the newb.  :thumb:

Thanks!

I only have experiences on the modules from R40/R61. I think they should be similar to those on T40/T60, but I am not sure.

Plainbriny,
Your posts were a big part of my interest in this and confidence that it can be done. Could you answer the same questions I asked above for the R series units? I can get those from Amazon too.
Hope you're safe in Taiwan right now.

I think all these modules did not differ much, just pick the cheapest one.

But I feel (not absolutely sure) the modules on later models might be more sensitive, may be to accommodate the higher resolution displays?
Thus for Q1 to Q4, there's no need to pick TP modules form specific models.

As for Q5, I believe many have tried to extend the stem and they still work pretty well. No need to worry about this one as well.

Before you go on, consider where the trackpoint is going and what keycaps will be affected.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

Thanks for the replies. I missed that post about extending the post. Very interesting. I have some titanium rod laying around that I think would be perfect for this application.

I've given the location a lot of thought but until I have a Trackpoint in hand and can compare directly to the Ergodox PCB and switches, it's largely a guessing game.
Because of the Teensy, it will obviously have to go on the right hand keyboard. Ideally, I'd like it between the qwerty y,u,h,j to limit reach but could move it farther left if needed. I could even give up one of the center 1.5 buttons if it meant I'd gain a pointer. Last resort, I could put it above the number row between the jack and the USB or *maybe* at the bottom of the keyboard which I've seen done with the full palm rest. Below would be the worst position for bending my hand. I'd probably just skip the project if that was the only option.

As before, any input is appreciated.
