Hello from a lurker
« on: Sun, 21 February 2016, 20:43:20 »
Hello there everyone!

I've been lurking around here for the better part of two years, and decided it was finally time to join the community. I was first introduced to geekhack by a search for an ergonomic keyboard, which lead me to AcidFire's thread for the Axios keyboard. My first mech was a Kinesis Advantage, which I purchased 3 years ago and only owned for ~3 weeks. I enjoyed it, but felt it wasn't quite right for me. Still, that sparked my interest in mechanical keyboards, so I've been looking for the perfect board ever since. I'm still waiting with an open wallet for the day the Axios releases!

All that said, I finally made my first informed mechanical KB purchase from Massdrop: a Varmilo VA87MR. Gateron brown, grey dyesub PBT caps, and blue LEDs. Compared to the MX browns on the Advantage, these Gateron browns are as smooth as butter. Couldn't be happier with my purchase! I'm hoping to get my hands on a set of SA keycaps soon to customize the board, preferably Penumbra!.

Anyway, I'm glad to finally be a part of the community, and I look forward to being more involved!

Boy that blue backlight looks really nice. I never thought I would like blue LEDs but imo that doesn't look bad at all. Hi, welcome  :)

Welcome to Geekhack!

That's a long time to luck :p

The Varmilo looks great - is it a white case?  Shades of grey :)

Gateron browns are 45g, right?  You might find SA keycaps are too heavy for such switches.  I've tried a couple of SA sets on MX blues (also 45g) and the keycaps are too heavy - the make the switches feel really, really light.  But on MX blacks or greens SA keycaps are great!

YMMV - you may prefer lighter switches.  I prefer heavy switches :p

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yes it is a white case! My lighting was a bit sub-par...I'm still working on my photography skills. :p

As for the weight of the SA keycaps, I've had the same concern you mentioned. I'll give it a try, and if they turn out to be too heavy for the browns, I'll just have a great excuse to start working on my next board with clears! :D

I have a white KeyCool that is white white, not off white or light beige.  It looks really good with lots of keycap sets.

Clears would suit SA keycaps quite well.
