What tools are needed to design custom keycaps?
« on: Wed, 24 February 2016, 12:48:39 »
Hello! I have been feeling inspired recently to design a set of custom keycaps. After admiring the beauty of Pulse and Carbon, I would like to get started in designing something myself. It's definitely a side project for me and by no means am I assuming this will be produced at any point.

What are the tools I need to design custom keycaps? I know Signature Plastics has specific colorways that I must use. What about the actual software used to visualize the keycaps? I'm referring to pictures like theses ones.

keyboard-layout-editor.com, color palettes are at the top.

GMK provide renders, SP don't so you'd have to get someone on this forum to make them.

Loosely speaking it would be possible to get fair results in Photoshop, but you'd need to know what you're doing and Photoshop isn't the kind of software you can just open and use... it takes years to learn (I've been using it for years now and still feel like I'm only scratching the surface).

As for the top-down view with some perspective distortion, you'd need a 3D program and a good rendering engine to to get that level of realism.  I think in this day and age it's quite easy to fall into the trap of thinking that software produces results; in actual fact, it's the people who control the software that produce the results.  ;)

I've recently been toying around with the idea of a Borderlands themed keyset and I decided to build a 3D model from scratch using Maya for the keycaps mesh and Mental ray for the rendering.  I know what I'm doing with the software and it has still taken me several hours to get to the stage where I am now (see below).  As xondat says, if you want to design a keyset you're best bet is to collaborate with somebody who knows how to use industry standard graphic design software (like Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop) and also 3D software too...not to mention the time to put everything together!

In my lowly opinion, a keyset doesn't look good until it looks realistic, and then you can make a judgement on whether or not it will work IRL.

I agree with what you're saying. I don't have any knowledge of graphic design software like Photoshop, etc, but for now I'm going to put some colors together and see what comes out of it. Eventually it would be nice to make some renders, definitely with the help of someone else, to see how good they would look IRL.

Been working for MONTHS on a layout with Inkscape, but it's so awful to use. Tried using Photoshop, but Photoshop doesn't recognize some of the text used whereas Inkscape has no problem with those.

keyboard-layout-editor.com is pretty cool but not as nice looking as I'd like it to be (like the renders). It's definitely useful to get some ideas flowing though, the website/ web app is well designed.

3D renders have become de rigeur for keysets going through IC, and virtually required if headed for an actual group buy these days. I don't think any serious keyset IC can succeed without them at this point. But for preliminary colorway experiments, they aren't terribly necessary. Your best bet is probably to either stick with the keyboard-layout-editor or pick up some 3D skills yourself.

However, I think there are enough community members capable of producing 3D renders that you will probably be able to find someone who will make them for you even if your colorways never go through IC (i.e., you just want pretty pictures to look at). Maybe someone could start a 3D keyset artist registry so folks such as yourself know how to contact for such services.

Yeah all good points. A 3D keyset artist registry would be nice to have for people like me who just wanna design for fun, for now, and who knows maybe one day make an actual IC if the design turns up really nice and not like something that someone has already created.

I've noticed that, around here at least, keysets with a strong theme and lots of novelties will get the most attention and support. Before you can show anyone your ideas, even in their most basic form, you'll need to draw those novelties yourself somehow. I'd get started on those Photoshop Elements tutorials if I were you...  ;)

No at all, I actually bought the Pulse in round 2.
