Silenced HHKB is awesome...but I lost my spacebar spring!!!
« on: Sun, 27 March 2016, 08:20:39 »
I lost the secondary spring that goes under the space bar  ...I know some of you have removed yours...if you may be willing to part with it, I'd be happy to have it!

I went to the orthodontist and they hooked me up with "medium" weight 1/4" elastics.  They fit perfectly and, man this is a new keyboard!

No worries. I actually REMOVED those springs under all my Topre spacebars.

How's it feel? I would try it myself, but I always worry about creating the spacebar whenever I remove it.

Feels exactly the same but the weight is a little lighter I suppose as the spring compensated for the larger mass of the keycap.  Easiest way to take the space bar off is to take off the keys on either side then pry with your fingers evenly.

For me, it feels smoother and a bit quieter. But I usually also reverse my spacebar.

Many people seem to lose their HHKB space bar extra spring.

Needs a warning label :))

Or someone to supply replacements ...
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I wonder why it is even put on there.. That spring feels so weak that I would think it is useless.

Ahh, maybe I'll give it a go. I'll probably lose the spring as well when I attempt this.

Subtle effect to offset the heavier space bar.

No worries. I actually REMOVED those springs under all my Topre spacebars.

Same, I REMOVE all my spacebar springs from all my Topre boards.

It feels nicer and more consistent to me.

Having the spring under spacebar is like using MX Red board with MX Black spacebar, or MX Blue board with MX Green spacebar.

Did any of you actually save the spring?

I save it for well.. I don't know actually. But I have a special box for springs and that really small stuff you're gonna loose otherwise.

I hope you lose your spring when you flip your spacebar back.

Where did I see that a retainer band for braces worked pretty well in place of a spring? Doesn't sound too terrible.

I personally just took a spring from a friend who prefers going springless  :))

I also take my spacebar spring out deliberately from my topre boards. otherwise it's too stiff and I miss spaces :(

so I have a couple laying around, but unless you're in Australia the shipping would be killer
