What teensy should I get / headspace for soldering?
« on: Wed, 23 March 2016, 12:02:34 »
I'm aware that this doesn't make much a difference but should I get a teensy 3 instead of 2? Or vice versus? I'm planning on getting a 2 but wanted to make sure.

Also, I'm plate mounting my keyboard, how much vertical space should I leave for soldering?

Most firmwares are written for the Teensy 2.0 so that's the easy option

As to the height that would depend on which switches you're using and how thick your top plate is as the distance for switches would be measured from the top of the plate to the bottom of the switch legs.  The Cherry MX datasheet shows you need 8.3mm for them :)

You should definitely go for Teensy 2.0 and not for 3.x or LC if you are not sure.
Using 3.x or LC is possible but you'll have a lot less options for firmware, and they require more programming knowledge.

8.3 just for switches? Or for soldering room too, I just don't wanna accidentally make my keyboard too small, but on the same hand don't wanna make it too large

The planck 10mm ones advertised as the normal. Id say that 8mm is the lowest one could possibly go. You may want to go to 12 mm just to be sure.

Just to clarify - the 8.3mm is *including* the plate thickness. So if you'll use a plate 1.5mm thick, the switches will take at most 6.8mm of the space below.

The first keyboard I built was a hand-wired Planck and I got 12mm standoffs. They worked, but I could have used 10mm ones. The soldering/wires should not increase the height, but you'll need to fit the teensy under there somewhere. On a Planck, there was no space where it could go that wouldn't contain switches (the bigger keyboards have space underneath the spacebar), and 10mm standoffs would actually work, although it would have been very tight.
