Topre weighting consistency?
« on: Tue, 26 April 2016, 10:33:34 »
Ok, to start off I don't really know if this is the right section to post on but I have a little question about their weight/actuation consistency because from what I felt with my recent usage of the hhkb and a fc660c which was from my girlfriend as a surprise gift.

Now the thing is they're both rated 45g uniform weighted but the FC660c actually felt heavier even after weeks on both equally.
Is it just the way the HHKB is mounted that made them felt softer or I am right on the part where the weight rating can actually vary quite a bit from one board compared to another?
This stop me from getting a 55g uniform board as I am afraid the 10g wouldn't be too of a difference.

I've seen many people say the FC660c feels heavier than 45g.

So it is true....

Now the question is are the 55g all that heavier feeling than the 45's?
I mean I could afford another keyboard anytime, but, having already had quite a few boards stashed I think it's just hard to swallow another one... :/

55g without question always feels heavier. I have a 660C and HHKB right here, but the 55g 87u is definitely heavier feeling, and slightly snappier as well.

FC660C is metal plate mounted, where as the HHKB is all plastic mounted, which makes up for the difference.

Ohh, those last few words really grabbed my attention as a fan of heavy switches but in need of them to be quiet enough.
While I really liked my old cherry greens/clears for tactility, they're just too scratchy/rough after trying topre out.

I had very much the same reaction when I moved from Cherry brown switches to HHKB -- the latter just felt (and still does feel) like it requires more actuation force.

And in a way it does: Topre's collapsing-dome structure means all the resistance is felt right at the beginning of the keystroke, so you need that full 45g of force right away to get the key to go down. The Cherry switch starts moving with a much lighter touch at first, but builds up as you press down -- you don't get the full 45g of resistance until you get closer to the bottom and the switch actually activates. It ends up with a much lighter feel.

Errmm, no? If you were to take the cherry brown's for comparison with the 45g on the hhkb then I'd say they're almost the same to me and might even feel a tad lighter for the brown's.

I actually read quite a bit about the differences between them both before I came looking for answers, if only I have someone close to me with a 55g for a testdrive. Sadly, it seems I will still need to blow yet another hole in the pocket. lol
