Howdy y'all
« on: Thu, 19 May 2016, 15:22:18 »
I have been in the game a short time, but I never introduced myself to the community. I go by Shartastical on Reddit, but Suembeaux is my name for damn near everything else. I enjoy this hobby greatly and I am starting to invest more money and time into it than anything else.

I am a native Texan, we do say "howdy" and "y'all," I drive a VW GTI--not a truck, I do not have a horse, boots, or a cowboy hat, southern hospitality is a very real thing. I am working with the Das Keyboard team in Austin on an enthusiast meetup in the coming months, so if you're local or are interested, let me know below!

I am also an aspiring photographer, I use my keyboards as subjects quite often. Here are a few of my favorites.

A bunch of stuff. Someone teach me how to properly solder.

These pictures are so lit.

As a Texan, should you have a firearm next to your keyboards in the pictures? jk, I'm bad at stereotypes. Welcome to geekhack :D.

I'll make sure I have one featured alongside my board in the next shoot :thumb:

The horror! Your spacebars have turned themselves around when you weren't looking! ^-^

Welcome. I look forward to seeing more of them tasty pics in the Keycap & Keyboard Photography thread

Oh and have you find the right switch yet?

I did not know that thread existed. I hope they like my work.

Right now, broken in Cherry blues are just the bees knees. But I have yet to try Topre. Blue is definitely my color, and I have tried Gateron, Kailh, Greetech, Cherry as well as PCB mounted Cherry. My G80-3000 is getting a ton of attention lately, I never knew PCB mount switches could be so good.

Yea I was just messing around about the spacebar. There are a bunch of people from GH that flip their spacebars :)

Oh interesting, so you prefer Cherry MX Blues over Gateron Blues? Is there a single defining attribute of Cherry MX Blues that you enjoy?

Cherry sounds slightly deeper to me, and although Gateron is objectively smoother, at full typing speed I can't tell the difference. The stems are also slightly bigger than Gateron, so I don't get that loose keycap wobble, and the actuation point feels more natural. The difference is truly minimal, but the Gaterons feel less stable than Cherry because of the slightly higher actuation point. This is all IMO of course.

Welcome to Geekhack!

That's a nice collection you have, and very nice pictures too!  Nice pictures are very much appreciated around here - just browse most of the threads in the media section.

Flipped space bars are plain wrong, by the way.  There's a thread about it.

If you are panning a meetup (or at least helping to organise one), by all means create a thread in off topic (if you haven't already), as not everyone checks the new members area, and there are a lot of Texans around here who might be interested!

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thank you on all the advice. Except the space bar bit, I can agree to disagree with you on that one.  :)) --lol at the thread though. I guess I just type weird.

I am trying to solidify the details of the meetup before posting it around on any forum, I want to make sure I actually have something to show before I unintentionally misinform people.

As soon as I start hearing back from vendors about raffle prizes (meaning I already have a location, the date is still up for discussion), I will spread the information to all corners of the internet.

Raffle prizes too?  That's a great draw card!

I will for sure, it is at minimum a moth out right now. I will be making announcements soon after a bit more surveying.
