Double shot key cap worn off down to its legends sub-layer.

This picture belongs to a fellow member involved in the huge logistics mess, that was caused, recently, by a Chinese former GH member. The interesting thing here is that the picture shows a couple of key caps that appear to be worn off down to the their bones, exposing the second bottom layer that is part of the legends.

Have you ever experienced something like this? In one thread I remember that Ivan mentioned that he saw something like this, but this is the first time I actually see it. Now, I wonder how long does it take for a keycap to be as worn off as this, or if it was caused by procedures like peroxide whitening, the so called retro-bright, that it is known for the bromides take off and its consequent plastic surface chemical abrasion. I suppose, that the phenomenon may happen in thinner key caps and not in thicker ones, like that of contemporary OG Cherry sets (late 80s and 90s) nor in modern GMKs.

Considering I can still see the texture on the "worn" caps, it is more likely that they are misprints and not caused from wearing. If it was from use, they would be as shiny as a new car.

You have Eagle eyes, good catch!; actually, that makes me feel a bit relief, as I only use double shots and I prefer the very old ones; right now, I am typing on a set that came from an old NCR PC4, maybe made back in 1985 or so, it should be over 30 years old, while looking good still, though.

This looks exactly like some of my Grabbag key caps, I'd be surprised to find these in complete sets though.

Yeah, probably the Chinese guy sold one of his grab bags' key caps as a "set".

It's not. It's most definitely not. Look at the other keycaps. Specifically the arrow. That's not misprint - that's straight up wear-through on two keys. Look at the keycaps next to it - there's excessive wear, clearly visible. Even if it was a misprint, it was never disclosed anywhere in any of the lists. At this point, it's beyond naive to think the majority of items shipped were not outright lied about in multiple regards.

The arrow key looks new to me, as there's still a lot of texture.
And the "+" key is impossible to have weared out just in its corner.

If it was possible to wear through good, double-shot keycaps from normal use you'd also be finding old keyboards with really cheap, thin keycaps with holes worn through them at Goodwill.

Yeah, I'd venture to say that anyone whose double-shot keycaps have become worn through the plastic from regular usage got what they paid for.

I have a few malformed keycaps like that from previous crap bags.

And in fact when Is aw that pic originally I though it was just a collection of some random crap bag keycaps.

I concur with you guys that wearing off a plastic surface by just typing on it is very unfeasible, to say the least; while, in the other hand, the theory of a molding defect in the second shot of a non filled cavity in the mold is fairly common, even in single shot molding. The last part of it, that the "set" is just a collection out of crap bags is the last event to conclude that these key caps are not worn off ones, but just defective parts out of the molding process.

If teh mold isn't put together properly, or if too much or not enough plastic is injected, you can get all sorts of weird deformities.
