I just wanted to introduce myself to the board.
I've been using a Model M since hearing a NPR segment on Unicomp back in 2009. For me it was endgame.
Lately I've been curious to try something different and have stumbled upon this community. What do you know, since then I've ended up with a few new boards:
Realforce 87U 55g (had to see what the Topre hype was about)
KUL-87 with Cherry Blacks (to try a linear switch)
Vortex ONE with Cherry Tactile Greys (to try stiff switches)
I like keycaps too. I pimped out my 2 Unicomp Model Ms with blank keycaps a few years back after seeing a Das Keyboard.
I just put some blank PBT caps on the KUL and have a couple more sets on the way for the other new Cherry board. I love blank caps; they have made me learn the intricacies of ANSI better, and achieve a higher state of flow.
That said, I'm hoping Massdrop will reissue Penumbra SA soon, or another awesome 70's looking SA cap set. It was love at first sight.
A few other things about me:
I touch type and think that MK aficionados who don't touch type are weirdos.
Speaking of weirdos, I meditate by touch typing in the dark with my screen off, lotus position, eye closed, transcribing the words that emanate from within the silence.
Not into backlighting.
Not into artisan keycaps.
Prefer to have a full size keyboard with num pad for my work setup.
I think that in 10 years or so this community will continue to grow to a point where there are new switch designs that are totally superior to anything we've seen to date, at which time we will chuckle and shake our heads at how cheap feeling the Cherry switches were. Of course, this will also mean the prices of the boards will skyrocket and we will similarly chuckle at how we used to this $200 Realforce boards were too expensive.
Currently I'd be interested in finding a high quality, super smooth and stable linear switch with a really nice bounce at the bottom; but I don't think this exists yet.
I'm learning a lot from this forum and think it's awesome to have so many people sharing a similar passion.
Cheers!
