Comics!
« on: Thu, 01 September 2016, 16:48:46 »
I found an old thread a few pages deep but it hasn't been updated in months so here's a squeaky clean, 9.6 grade comic book thread. I know there HAS to be some comic nerds lurking these hallways.... I can smell 'em

So, what are you guys reading? What are your favorite comics/runs? Who are your favorite writers/artists? How many wedgies can you take before chafing? Anything comic book related, dump it here.

I'm currently reading through Flashpoint to get some frame of reference before jumping back into Rebirth. I've never been much into the Big 2 though, having previously stuck mostly to Image, Dark Horse, random indie publishers, but I'm actually enjoying DC's, like, main story more than I thought I would. I've read a few Batman runs and Flash runs but have never followed DC's story through multiple crossovers and tie ins like I'm trying to do now.

Favorite comic of all time? That's tough but I've got to give it to Hellboy which beats out my other close favorites because in addition to it being an amazing lovecraftian type story with references to actual mid-century mysticism, it has my favorite artist of all time: Mike Mignola. His style suits Hellboy so well. A close second though is basically anything Brian K. Vaughan touches. Saga, of course, but Private Eye was pretty dope too. Whats cool is a lot of the costume designs he used in that were inspired by Nick Cave's soundsuits.

I haven't gotten a chance to check out Rebirth yet but I hear it is fantastic!

Did you see The Killing Joke?

I haven't read much of Rebirth because I want to read the stories to that lead into it first. From what people have told me, it's 100% unnecessary as Rebirth is supposed to be a jumping on place for people like me who have never really followed the DC stories, but I'm a completionist and it would drive me nuts not knowing how events began. The Justice League and Superman runs that start shortly after Convergence are the 2 that most people say would be "required reading" for someone who's trying to get an idea of the starting events of Rebirth. But I figured I might as well add Convergence to the list so that I could understand how THOSE stories began... then one thing lead to another and now I'm all the way back on Flashpoint. Comics are a rabbit of hole, man. It's already feeling tedious but now I'm committed.

And no, I haven't seen the Killing Joke and don't know if I will tbh. I think Alan Moore's vision and characterization of the Joker are perfect and trying to rationalize or explain what happened would destroy the story.

You aren't missing much. I was not very pleased with it.

I remember reading The Killing Joke and not being impressed with it as much. I love Moore's stuff (admittedly, I've read only From Hell, Watchmen, and early issues of Saga of the Swamp Thing), but just didn't like The Killing Joke that much. No way am I going to watch the film.

That said, I'm trying to catch up again. I took a few months of a hiatus from comics to focus on another hobby (retro gaming), but now that my hours are limited again, and that I usually finish a comic series a lot faster than a game, I'm reading comics for my leisure.
I read trades for the most part as I'm a relatively patient person and have so much to catch up on that, by the time I get to something, it's either done or has a collected trade out.  :p

Anyway, right now I'm reading One-Punch Man, and just remembered Nowhere Men was running again, so I went to pick up #7. Can't wait to start that tonight.
There's so much I've got to catch up with!
