Hot swap pcb/boards question
« on: Wed, 03 July 2019, 12:35:49 »
Are there any boards that are available right now that support the 5 pin mx style switches (and the 3 pin but I imagine it would have to support 3 pin to work with the 5 pin switches). I have been looking and all I have found are 60% keyboards which I would prefer a larger layout or GMMK and others that seem to only support the 3 pin style switches. I'm not sure about the kira though. I'm thinking the only other option here would be to buy those mill max converter things and solder them in to board that supports the 5 pin.

Mill Max are very expensive and a pain to solder each one in. On top of that it will only work with certain thicknesses of switch legs. You can use 3 pin or 5 pin mx switches, it doesn't matter. If the pcb doesn't have the holes for 5 pin, just cut off the plastic legs on the switch with a flush cutter or exacto knife. KDBFans has hotswap boards, otherwise if you want to go higher end the Rama U80a is a TKL with hotswap.

You can use any 5-pin switch in a 3-pin PCB by trimming off the plastic pegs. Their primary purpose is to locate the switch when there is no plate installed, and the vast majority (bar the Kumo) of hotswap boards are plated.
