Matias switches and generic alps - interchangeable?
« on: Thu, 06 October 2016, 14:00:03 »
I'd like to ask those who got both of these kind of switches to check if that's possible to use some of its parts interchangeably.

I've got Dell AT101W keyboard and would like to change its stems and top cases for those who came from matias. It would help me to avoid messing with the solder gun and the board.

Stems yes, top housing no. Simplified alps have their contact mechanism secured by rails in the top housing rendering it incompatible with complicated alps.

Ironically the bottom housing is interchangeable, but I don't imagine that's gonna be helpful for you  :p

Stems yes, top cases no. Matias switches use the later simplified design and the SKCM blacks in the at101w use the complicated switchplate design.

I have not tried this combination, but I think that in addition the slider, the spring and tactile/click leaf should be interchangeable. Could someone verify this? Alternatively, if you want to convert tactile black Alps to clicky black Alps, you can do a click mod on the tactile leaves. There are at least two tutorials on this procedure that have been posted.

FYI, I have put the slider and tactile leaf from a Matias Quiet switch into the spacebar switches on two keyboard: one with SKCM white and another with SKCM blue. I like clicky switches on most of the keys, but I prefer the spacebar to be as quiet as possible.

I believe the leaf springs are cross-compatible as well, yes (although I have only tried fitting Matias leaf springs into SKCM, not the other way around, I don't see why it wouldn't work)

The sliders and click/tactile leafs are interchangeable. The springs are different sizes but they are also interchangeable though it's fiddly.
