Not sure if anyone out there has had a similar experience, I have a Filco MJ2 with MX browns that I've been using for a couple of weeks. I really love using the letter keys, but the modifier keys seem to be much harder to press by comparison. Especially the Ctrl key on the left side, but also the Windows and Alt keys next to it which I use as option/command keys on my Macbook pro. I could be wrong, but I don't think it's a defect. My CM QFR with reds exhibits a similar differential between the letter and modifier keys, although with reds being much softer than browns it's not as much of a problem. Has anyone had a similar experience with the same or a different keyboard? Can I expect the modifier keys to become easier to press with time?

Thanks much, Nir

i've never heard of this specific issue before, but most keyboards have a little bit of a "break-in" period.

I own a Filco MJ2 with browns as well and I hadn't noticed any differences between modifier and normal keys what you described. All the keys have been consistent to me thus far. But I'll check when I get home and report back here to update

Thanks, I appreciate it. There may actually be something wrong with the switch under my left Ctrl key. I took the keycaps off of both the left and the right control keys and tried pressing the switches directly. When I press the left one I can feel friction past the tactile bump that isn't there with the right one. With the keycap on it seems to make it harder to bottom out, which creates a sort of awkward sensation that clashes with the rest of the keyboard. I'm thinking I should return it since I have just one week left to do so with Amazon, and I have no guarantee that it'll get better.

That actually just sounds like the spring isn't set in the switch properly. It's an easy fix if you don't mind voiding the warranty/are too lazy to ship it back to Amazon.

Oh, I'd definitely try it out if it's not too complicated! Is there a video or a list of instructions somewhere?

Hey there,

Just got home and tried out the keys that you were having trouble with and I have to say, all my keys are consistent. No abnormalities as what you've described. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks for checking, I'm going to return it. Seven mechanical keyboards in and I'm left with the $80 CM QFR with reds as my favorite :)

Whoa, 7?! To be fair though, there are many mods that can be done to the QFR. Heck, if I had one I'd just go broke modding the thing.

What kind of mods do you suggest? I'm thinking of getting doubleshot keycaps for it, but the keys are already so light, I'm worried heavier keycaps will make them too light :)

Yeah I got a BlackWidow Ultimate with Razer greens (pretty good actually, my wife uses it more than me though) Das 4 Pro with blues, Realforce 87u 55g, Metallic BlackWidow X Tournament Edition (didn't like it), Das 4 Pro with browns, the Filco, the CM QFR, and another Realforce 87u 45g EK edition. I guess that makes eight! I found that pretty much anything above 45g is too heavy for me. I love the action of the Das 4 pro with browns but hate the cherry-stabilized spacebar, so I pretty much just go back and forth between the CM QFR which I love, and the Realforce 45g which is really excellent and fun to use, but doesn't have as much of a mechanical feel.

umm, you could do the detachable cable mod, swap out the controller for a pegasus hoof to make it fully programmable,, swap out the case for an aluminium one, change the colour of the scroll lock and capslock led....sound dampening material on the bottom of the case...

Try lubing it.

Oh my god, they make aluminum cases for these things?!? That is literally the last thing on my checklist for the ideal mechanical keyboard that the QFR doesn't have. It has everything else I want (costar stabilizers, reds or browns, TKL) but I was blown away by how much better the typing experience was on the Das 4 Pro because of the aluminum body. It uses cherry stabilizers though which is a dealbreaker for me.

They seem to be really expensive, but I just have to get one now... probably gonna go with this one:

Will look into lubing it too, we are talking about reds though so I'm not sure I want them to be even easier to press.

TEX is about the only option you have for a Filco.

QFR and Filco fit the same cases, but the Filco MJ2 has a much nicer PCB.

Personally, I'd say that if you want an aluminum case, you should really look into getting a Korean custom. They generally heavier cases.

CPTBadAss is selling his KMAC LE Ti on the classifieds, if you're willing to drop nearly $700 on a keyboard with no keycaps or cable. Having typed on it, I'd say it's worth it.

Thanks for suggesting the aluminum case, I got a Tex TKL case and I friggin' love it! Possibly the best thing you can do to improve the feel of a keyboard.
