Greetings from Toronto, Canada. 'Hello World'
« on: Thu, 01 December 2016, 21:16:01 »
Hey all,

I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself. I'm Scott and I am a mechanical/hybrid switch keyboard addict, my last key press was 0.1 seconds ago and I have thus never been able to earn any merit badges. Kidding aside, I would like to thank many of you for helping me to learn a whole crapload of information on mechanical keyboards in the last several months. I have always been into computers - putting them together, gaming on them, working with them at the office etc. and until recently, I shamefully used rubber dome keyboards as I mistakenly just assumed a keyboard was a mere tool to communicate with my pc's. It was surprising how quickly a switch was just clicked on (pun intended) in my brain when I happened to see an ad for Massdrop and wonder why there was a whole section on mechanical keyboards. That's when I started really looking into them in July of this year...and here I am now. After having watched hundreds of Youtube videos (many featuring a well known 'Hello and welcome' guy you all know) and perused dozens of articles and websites, I am getting that familiar feeling that I'm only just beginning to scratch the surface. How many key switches could there be? I wondered to myself when I decided between Cherry MX Blue, Brown and Red for my first mech board - a Corsair Strafe with MX Silent btw. I understand how ridiculous that question is now, because I have been discovering new switches almost every day and have been building an ever-growing wish list that is sure to cost me tens of thousands of dollars! I mean, space invader switches? How cool is that!?

Ok, I'm definitely rambling. Point is - I love mechanical keyboards and I look forward to contributing and learning from you all in these forums and I'm glad I have truly found a new passion. It was there all along, ever since I used that first buckling spring IBM board in my elementary school typing class back in the 90's.

After the Corsair Strafe/MX Silent, I quickly bought a Corsair K70/MX Blue to use at home and brought the silent one to work because I didn't want my coworkers to kill me. I hope you can forgive my purchasing blatant 'gamer' keyboards - they were my first mech purchases! About a month ago, I bought a CM Novatouch that I plan to silence with either hypersphere's rings or the EK landing pad mod and will also lube. I fell in love with Topre instantly and have plans to buy a realforce and either HHKB or Leopold in the future. That brings me to this past Tuesday, when I found my first truly special one. I found a poster advertising 3 NIB Model M's about an hour west of me in Waterloo and even though I am moving soon and am rather broke, I had to at least go check it out. Here's the result of that:

Great to meet you! Hopefully I can make it to an upcoming event in our area in the future. I heard Matias usually has something at their office every year or two...

Welcome :)

I see you've caught the Topre bug :))
After using my Pro 1 as a daily board only smooth linear switches on the, "MX" side have been able to satisfy me.

Just waiting for a custom I like before I go & get another MX board.
If they can make silents as smooth as vintage black or Gateron black I'd probably use those :p
Still a bit too scratchy even lubed IMO.

Have any keycap plans?

Yeah I agree with you, it's definitely a bug and Topre quickly made the cherry MX boards I had feel....inferior. I use the Strafe with Silents at work, and they're not bad, but definitely scratchy like you said - the kinda feel like typing through very fine sand.

I just got a Ducky One with Cherry MX White (Chinese Milk) switches and I must say, it's by far my favorite Cherry switch now - They're quite a bit heavier, but the softer and less piercing click is great. I also lucked out and happened to get a board with consistent feeling switches (at least in all the letters). I just got those white PBT Leopolds on my Novatouch in the first pic, which have been awesome. I'm kinda still building up my keyboard base before getting into keycaps. I think I want to get an HHKB or RF next, and then find a board with old white or blue Alps switches. So many choices and so little money for them all! In due time haha...
