Hi from London, England. I seem to have found a new obsession.
« on: Mon, 30 January 2017, 09:55:14 »
Hi, I didn't know mechanical keyboards were even a thing until a few days ago, despite having an addiction to clicky things all my life (perfect nintendo buttons, battery compartments on remote controls). I was looking at a roundup of gaming keyboards on Polygon which was all RGB backlit RAZERs and stuff - not my sort of thing at all -  and someone in the comments section absolutely slated the article and named a few other boards like Filco Majestouch, etc and I've pretty much done nothing but look at geekhack, the mech subreddit and youtube vids since then. I also think I've discovered I have ASMR...

Anyway, I'm a video editor/vfx guy using flame, adobe suite and other things. I'm just about to build a PC (longtime MAC user) and am thinking of trying to learn UNITY or Gamemaker for videogame making, which has led me down the path of needing to learn to code, which ties in nicely with me needing a nice keyboard. The enthusiasm and level of detail in this community is astounding and has been a rich source of information. I was freelancing at a production company yesterday, doing my usual thing and and became hyper-aware of how many keystrokes didn't register and how many times I had to undo things to correct for this. It was killing me! I guess I never knew there was a better way!

I seem to be zoning in on buying a Leopold 660m from widebasket on ebay, something that wouldn't be happening without this community right here. So thanks! I feel like I've gone down a deep rabbithole, can see myself ending up with a little collection... it's in my nature.

Englaaaaaand represent!

That Leopold 660 is a fine way to start your hobby, amazing key layout. Got to watch out though all you'll be dropping hundreds of $£€ monthly on customs, it's a dangerous hobby

Don't buy a Filco though, they're soo good you'll need to buy 40 more and start collecting the limited edition versions. The damn valentines pink one is impossible to find in the UK  :p

Cheers for the tips! I was initially set on fullsize Filco MJ2, then the TKL version, then as I kept browsing the millions of pics of various boards I just kept wanting smaller and smaller ones... but... I need them easy arrows, I use them all the time... so Leopold it is. I guess brown switches are good to start with... There just seems to be nowhere at all I can go and try anything out, which is mental considering how big London is.

Mechs are kinda a niche market, so it's understandable that most stores wouldn't dedicate the shelf space to displaying keyboards. Your best bet is probably to try the local PCWorld or Game shops, they tend to have the 'gaming' type products on display. I don't recommend getting any of the keyboards from Razer, Logitech or Corsair but at least some of them do have proper Cherry switches for you to try.

I'd say MX Browns are a nice starter. I had MX Reds first, then moved to MX Browns, and it was much nicer (there is a lot better [non-stock though]). There's a meetup in Southampton on Feb 12th if you can hold off, there will be lots of switches/keyboards etc to try there!

I also think I've discovered I have ASMR...

Good tip. I'm actually heading to Soho this afternoon and there's a new GAME that's opened up with a PC gaming basement. I'll go check it out.

Ha! My partner has it and I've always been intrigued but this keyboard thing has really got to me in a new way. I found myself playing a keyboard ASMR youtube playlist while working a nightshift at the weekend. It was strangely relaxing, and addictive.  :-X

Don't go any deeper. Terribly addictive.
