FILCO musings (AKA FILCO review)
« on: Mon, 15 February 2010, 18:19:41 »
Just a few musings having spent a couple of weeks around a FKBN105MC/UKB and FKBN105M/UKB.

I was duly impressed by just how rock solid and smart the keyboards look, making anything else look pale in comparison. The lettering on the key caps doesn't always line up though (for example, '[' and ']' aren't level vertically), and Diatec have persisted the amusing Japanism of "CapsLock" :) but it's not something that most people would notice ... except probably everyone here. I find the keycaps a little wobbly though, and the shift key twists around a lot if pressed on one side, which I don't see in other keyboards.

Contrary to what I've read, the browns seem stiffer than blues! The blues are very soft, but the tactile bump is there. I don't consider the browns to be even remotely tactile, but that's not a great bother to me as I'm not likely to be able to type reliably without bottoming out :) One thing that takes getting used to is having to raise your finger a lot higher to release the key when tapping repeatedly. (I wonder how much worse the linears really are now.)

I'm surprised to see visible spacebar wear on both keyboards after only two weeks! I don't even type that much ... or do I? A bit worrying.

What I also notice with the browns is that a lot of the keyswitches scrape quite audibly when pressed, and it's the switch as I've had the keycap off and pressed it with my finger. Is this normal? My brown in the office also has a squeaky spacebar :P Doh.

Videos differ greatly in sound; I would consider the following two videos closest to how my M and MC sound, except I don't have the same level of reverb in my environment around the blue:

YouTube: Cherry blue FILCO
YouTube: Cherry brown FILCO

I'm getting used to the high noise levels of both, and the sound of the blue, initially disturbingly loud, is now quite comfortable. I don't find that the blue interferes with my music at all, and in fact means that while listening to music I can finally hear myself typing again, which is something I've always wanted! It's important to bottom out a blue to get the pleasing sound formed from the high-pitched, sharp click and the softer, mellow impact sound. The clickers are a little fragile though, as I've damaged one already with a botched attempt to remove a keycap, and it sounds weird and doesn't feel quite as sharp now.

The brown at my desk at work is a lot noisier than I expected but no-one seems to have noticed yet. I am disappointed in the scrapiness of the MX switches -- the sound isn't as pure as I'd like from the switch scrape and the spacebar squeak.

It might still take me weeks, maybe months to truly get used to both keyboards, especially as neither is perfect (and I doubt any keyboard ever wil be) but I think I'm going to be happy :)

Huge improvement over what I had before, that is for sure!

Give the 'boards a week or two of good use.  The "scraping" will go away.  I don't recall my first Filco nor either of my Cherry 'boards with this "scraping."  My second Filco had it, but it's long gone now.
