Zealencios or O-Rings?
« on: Thu, 02 March 2017, 10:49:04 »
I just switched my daily driver. I went from 62g Gateron Blacks with thick lube and o-rings to 62g Gateron Yellows with thin lube and Zealencios. I am still assessing how I feel about the Zealencios. I got so used to the reduced travel distance on my o-rings that it has been an adjustment. Overall, I am really enjoying them. I do not think that they silence as much as o-rings but I really like the crisp sound of the key press on them. What are your thoughts?

have you tried smaller diameter o-rings?
I've never used the zealencios so i cant compare but I used the thick clear o-rings from massdrop on my daily driver and opted to go to a thinner o-ring with the pandas and It does make a bit of a difference in feel with the longer travel. I definitely prefer them at work.

Yup. Just enough to get rid of the "tick" when you bottom out but not really shortening the travel by much.

I've using Zealencios + 1.5mm O-rings + 67g Zelios on one of my keyboards.
It's a great combination - crisp and silent with no key wobble at the top.
A refined jailhouse blue would be a good description.

I was amazed just how much of a difference the zealencios made.  I like them much more than o rings.  I actually installed the zealencios wrong at first.  They are much easier to install before soldering into the board I found.  There is a loud click when they snap into place.

After trying both Zealencios and O-rings, I can safely say I prefer zealencios. The bottom out does not feel as mushy, plus the upstroke is silenced as well.

I don't think I've tried thinner O-rings. Those may feel less mushy than what I had, but I'm not sure.

I agree. After a few weeks with them, I am really enjoying them. I thought that I would miss the travel distance but I have grown and loved the feel and sound of them.

They only work well with cherry profile in my experience. Even slightly higher profile like OEM and certainly SA doesn't really do much to silence the noise. It just converts the clack to a slightly more tinny / plasticky sound. Cherry is very quiet compared to no zealencios.

Interesting. I've only used them with Cherry profile so I can't chime in on that.

Silents would offer a solution compatible with all caps?

Yes I have been told by Zeal themselves that Cherry profile is the way to go if you want silencing on both up stroke and bottom out. I am having a problem trying find Cherry profile keycaps with UK ISO layout though. Does anyone know of any available anywhere? I keep checking Massdrop and Group Buys but haven't seen anything yet. It's not always clear if keycaps are Cherry profile though, but maybe I'm not sure what I'm looking at.

Beware that with thick Cherry profile keys, all switches except a few stabiliser keys must be oriented south.
There is too little room underneath the keycap for the thickness of the silencing clips otherwise.

Yes, I was told this by Zeal. Not a problem, but I am just having trouble finding any Cherry profile keycaps that are PBT (I hate shine) and UK ISO.
