Can my Filco Majestouch be fixed?
« on: Mon, 17 April 2017, 19:18:10 »
It seems like I've messed up a few key switches on my Filco Majestouch 2 keyboard.  I've tried repeatedly to fix them but I don't know if it's possible.

I love the keyboard and I'm hoping to avoid having to buy a brand new one simply because a few keys don't work.  The keys that don't work are the Arrow keys (or at least two or three of them).  I use these keys probably more than any other keys on my keyboard.

I've tried soldering the switches back on to the circuit board, but I'm afraid I've messed up at least one of the switches beyond repair.

I'm wondering if it's possible to buy just the circuit board?  Maybe a more skilled solderer could get them working again but I doubt I can.

Close up pictures would help.  I don't know that I've ever seen someone wear out a cherry mx switch in a few years so yes, it's probably the PCB.

Or, Maybe you spilled something in it?  Maybe the contact in switches are gummed up?  I'm sure there are a few people around here with spare switches, but we need to know which switches you have.

The filco case is compatible with the phantom PCB, but that might be beyond your soldering ability.

We need some more details for better feedback.

Repairing keyboards beyond a few keys usually gets quickly beyond the realm of a reasonable "quick fix" for most people. It's fairly laborious desoldering and resoldering 87 switches without a desoldering gun, but it can be worth it if you're into making custom things and are willing to put in the time. I replaced the switches in my Filco with tuned Gaterons and quite like it, though I nearly lifted a few pads. Probably would have been much better to get a Phantom PCB and start it from scratch, though you need a plate.

Totally reasonable to replace a few if you have time and soldering to spare.
