Tactile MOD switches, what do you guys think?
« on: Tue, 30 May 2017, 11:44:41 »
So I'm running a little low on funds for my mech KB addiction & was looking for a cheap project to keep me busy. I got lucky & found a batch of 70 tactile MOD-L switches locally for $25 so I decided to swap them into my FC660M.

Now if you have seen any of my posts on here or r/mk you'll know I'm big on heavy springs & lubed switches, so of course I had to do some tuning to the MOD-Ls before they fit my preferences. I went with Cherry White springs I had left over from my Clueboard build to get them to a weighting I like & Geekhacker's thick krytox mix for the lube. The results turned out better than I expected, now that I've had a few days of using this board with this setup I can say that tactile MOD switches are the real deal if you're looking for high tactility. They give the best tactile feedback I have ever experienced in a switch. Zealios are really close but I think MODs have them beat in tactility TBH. The only major complaint I can see with the tactile MOD switches is that tactile MOD-Ls were very pingy in their stock form but that is nothing a touch of lube can't fix. All in all I am very pleased & impressed with these tactile MOD switches, I'm planning on hopefully using tactile MOD-H or MOD-SH switches in my next build. Anyways after using these switches for a few days now & really enjoying them myself I am curious to see what everybody else thinks of them. So what do you guys/gals that have tried tactile MOD switches think about them?

They have a decent tactile bump, but they still feel scratchier than stock cherries. Lubing helps some but I was really disappointed in these switches.. I thought they were touted as "pre-tuned" with lubrication on the sliders, but it doesn't seemed to have helped.

I prefer modded cherry, or 68g+ zealios for a good bump. MODs are some of the worst, un-tuned switches I have felt. Just IMHO  :p

Fair enough, although your post makes me wonder if they have been revised? The MOD-Ls I got are honestly fairly smooth in their stock form to me, not Zealio level of smooth but I've definitely felt worse stock Cherry brown/black/red before. After the Krytox & spring swap they feel just as smooth as my lubed tactile greys but with a much better bump.

I can see where you are coming from though if you paid full price for a batch or bought a board with tactile MODs in it & they were very scratchy, I would be pretty unhappy put in the same situation myself. Also I do remember them being touted as a pre tuned switches when they were 1st coming out. The batch I got though is definitely not that scratchy, whether they are a revised version or I just got lucky I couldn't tell you.

yaaah I don't mean to sound like a Debbie-Downer, key feel is all very subjective. I'm glad some people are enjoying them, as I've mostly heard so-so reviews. =)

I had tactile mod-Ms, for reference. Was just disappointed even after tuning them.

I recently picked up a sampler pack and went with 90x MOD-M switches for my next build. I think you may be correct about a smoothness revision because mine feel just a tad "dry" and not scratchy at all (they still have more ping and wobble then Zealios). I would lube them but kinda worried the tactile bump will be reduced (I've never lubed switches before).

I did one build with MOD-Ms and the bump is definitely more pronounced compared to Zealios. I like the MOD switches, but I prefer 67g Zealios by a small margin. I'm not terribly sensitive to scratchiness so I have no comment there.

I don't trust other people to tune my switches, DIY should always produce the best result when it comes to personal preference. Only good thing about these mass produced pre-tuned switches are consistency but you get pretty good at it when you've done 1000+ switches

I have 65g ergo clears, 65g zealios & mods.

Mod's are super tactile but not refined, they feel like they are on stilts to me due to their wobbliness. I do enjoy the tactility, but like others have said- I personally prefer the alternatives for a more well rounded experience.

I've contemplated de-soldering my mod board at this point to replace with others but have lost a bit of the keyboard itch so who knows when I'll get around to it.

The ping & wobble are 2 things I experienced with mine as well. With their stock spring the MOD-Ls I got had a very defined ping when testing them loose, after a spring swap & krytox the ping has completely disappeared. The wobble on the other hand is definitely there but no worse than Gateron IMO. It's something that could become an issue using SA profile caps but is really not to noticeable while using Cherry or OEM profile caps. I would suggest lubing them if you think doing so will make them suit your preferences better. They are lightly lubed at stock & IME unless you really overdo the lube it doesn't affect tactility to the point that the bump disappears.

TBH, this is really my 1st foray into boutique switches. MODs, Zealios, etc. never really interested me to much since I personally tune all my switches now. For awhile I figured why bother with them if they are supposed to be "pre tuned" versions of popular MX switch modifications. That was until I finally got  my hands on some sample Zealios & realized they do have a much different tactility than even Cherry Clears. Since then I've wanted to get a batch of 67g Zealios but just haven't had the funds to be splurging on my hobbies recently. I think honestly if I had a board full of Zealios I tuned & MODs I tuned, I would probably prefer the Zealios slightly. The reason I started this post though is because the MODs really surprised me with how good they feel.

As far as scratchiness goes I wouldn't say I'm terribly sensitive to it but it definitely not a trait I like in my switches. If this batch of MOD-Ls was very scratchy at stock I would've probably just thrown them in my switch collection & just used them for comparison. I will say that Zealios are definitely smoother at stock but scratchiness was just not one of the negatives I found in my batch of MOD-Ls. They are pretty much on par with Gateron as far a smoothness goes, the only switches I have in a board right now that I would say are smoother are the new Cherry blacks.

I don't trust other people to tune my switches, DIY should always produce the best result when it comes to personal preference. Only good thing about these mass produced pre-tuned switches are consistency but you get pretty good at it when you've done 1000+ switches

I will definitely 2nd this opinion, in fact being based on popular MX switch mods is what kept me from going with MODs or Zealios earlier. I'm of the same mindset that switch tuning is something you should do for yourself to get the best result for you personally. TBH I think this is why I have had such a good experience with MOD switches so far vs those who found them underwhelming. Expectation, expectations, expectations. I completely understand someone being unhappy if they paid full price for a batch of switches or a board with them, were expecting a "pre tuned" switch with no tweaking needed, & got a product they feel didn't meet those expectations. In my case I got them dirt cheap, planned on tuning them to my preferences from the onset, & got either ones that have been revised since they launched or really lucky & got a batch that is smoother than normal for MODs. So to me, not having huge expectations in them to begin with, they surpassed what I was hoping for out of them.

That is a fair evaluation of MODs, when comparing them to Zealios I did notice the Zeals do feel much more refined. To me though that is more because of Zeal having the time to refine his switches vs MODs still being fairly new. I think they will get them tightened up over time time as well. Also while I will agree that Zealios are more refined I don't think MODs are any worse than stock Cherry or Gateron switches, actually I think they are a bit better stock TBH but that comes down more to personal preference so that opinion is definitely debatable.

The only major complaint I think I would've had if I used these switches stock would be the ping. I found that to be pretty bad & consistent through my whole batch, but I really didn't dwell on it much since I planned on tuning them anyways & the spring swap & lubing completely got rid of it also. They do have a good bit of wobble but no more than stock Gaterons IMHO & I can really only see that becoming a big issue with SA caps. Using them with Cherry profile I have not noticed the wobble at all really.

Thanks for the feedback so far everybody! ;) I think this thread is turning into a good one for what to expect with MOD switches, hopefully it will get some use in the future by people looking into MODs. :thumb:

I'd say MOD-M's are really close to my Zealios but I just love the purple.
