Black M13 for parts
« on: Sat, 20 March 2010, 12:02:28 »
In search for a dirt-cheap parts-grade M13, one finally shows up on Ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330415675731

A key or two is missing part of the label and supposedly doesn't work when plugged in - but it's good enough for what I'm wanting to do w/ it.

Keyboard in question:

As far as I'm concerned w/ keyboards, I have found my version of the Holy Grail.

A little fixing can get it working fine in no time. Some people just don't want to put the effort though.

Although, the spacebar and backspace seem a bit worn; unless the dust is playing tricks on me in that picture.

Yeah, and I'd clean that thing first.

Well, the G/H keys are destined for my good M13.

At the worst, I can obliterate the key labels and get my single-width blanks.

Sellers often post things like "DOA" even on broken products because of:
A) habit
B) using the same layout for ads

He says it's broken, you know it is, and the pictures of it look quite grizzly.

Looks to me like E, S, D, N and C are well on their way to blankness.

We used to have people around here that would argue the Filco keycoating was useless, but they were idiots.    I think anyone that has a M13 might want to look into some clearcoating sprays.

That might be useful for the M13 keys that are already on my Terminal F.  I'm saving the G/H off this board to put in my working M13.

Since you're parting this out, mind giving me a shout once you've determined what you won't want or need?

I think someone's gonna call dibs on the trackpoint and associated electronics, and there's someone out there who needs a new button panel, but I'd be interested to see what's left in the end.

(assuming you don't want to keep all parts for yourself)

And you can put a layered piece of masking tape on the spacebar (wherever you hit it) to reduce wear there. It's actually more grippy too. Although, it's less noticeable on a beige keyboard.

Also, I'd like to get some stuff to coat black keys; if I ever get a BLACK keyboard. Come to think of it, I don't own one. Hmmm.

As I dont have a beadblaster to blank out the keys, what might be the next best thing to obliterate the type off the non-M13 specific keys(e.g. not the G/H)?

Update: I've got it, keyboard functions.  It's a Maxi-Switch from Mexico, pictures forthcoming.

s/d/n/l/k/c are well-worn.
a/e/r are showing signs of wear.

Tapping the underside of the frame near the numpad 1-key results in a repeat as if it were receiving a keypress.
