IBM 5160 for sale

How much is this worth.....not very original from specs.....but the IBM XT F board and 5153 CGA monitor will go nicely :)

I think it is a copycat XT/AT keyboard, likely non-mechanical too.

For starters, it's yellowed, uses the AT layout and has no IBM label at the top left. The only advantage is that it would work an a modern computer whereas the original keyboard won't.

The indicator lights have a similar layout to my old Chicony KB-5161 ALPS keyboard, I don't know if this has any significance or not, just thought it might be helpful.

That is one NASTY keyboard. If you do plan on buying that (I wouldn't), tell him to keep the keyboard.

And yeah, most vintage stuff is only worth money if it's all original. The ones I got are original as far as I can tell.

If you're buying it to test your keyboard, I'd wait to find something else.

The 5160s don't go for NEARLY as much as the 5150. The 5150 is marketed at $500 for the retail price. The 5160 barely makes it to $200.

Plus, that 5160 is far too modified.

I'd give you one of my 5160s, but, distance is a big foe.

5150 is next to useless for a hobbyist, particularly the early ones (doesn't stop the prices being stupidly high though - the original earns value on the basis of being original). Limited expansion + lack of BIOS extensions on the early ones means you're stuck with pre-VGA graphics (and a clunky unreliable inefficient irradiating monitor to match). 5160 has the expansion, the extensions...and stronger power supply too.

I'd like either, but space is a concern, as are the +$100 shipping from virtually anywhere, even one city away as an example.

No no no, I hooked up my 5150 to a 32" TV.

And, they can do a fair bit...

Never understood wanting to hook up any computer to a TV. Seems like a last resort only, never to be desired.

Without BIOS extensions (which the early ones lacked), there is no hope for installing a properly bootable hard drive and I'm fairly sure you're screwed for upgrading to a high density floppy controller too.

Original configuration on any of these machines is worthless to me; I'd want to secure the following before taking in such a machine:

-VGA graphics card
-High density floppy drive controller
-500MB hard drive and suitable controller

Sometimes I feel the urge to break a monochrome video card in half on video to see what the purists say...

i plan on using my own board, CGA monitor (IBM) and replacing the mainboard back to IBM (he has this)
Not suprised the drive and PSU have failed in the past.... :)

Well, today's HDTV is an excellent VGA-level monitor, especially if it doesn't stretch the image.

As for the 5160-- WTF?  Replacement parts all over the board.  It's a clone in an XT case.  May as well be a Duron 750 clone in an XT case.

Well, since I got mine for free, and I have both a 5150, and a 5160, I'm satisfied.
It'd be cool to get some 5" floppies though... used to have some, threw them out.

Would I be able to hook any of those 5" floppy drives up to an intellistation or netvista? I can pull one from a 5160 :)

You'd wanna go with a 5.25" half-height high density drive probably...low density only if swapping with the old rig (which you likely would be I guess)

Should be doable if it has a floppy connector. Next time you reboot, check BIOS floppy options for 360K as an option. Should be there.

Might not fit in the case, but you can run the cables out the side.
