Cherry G80-1800 question
« on: Fri, 09 April 2010, 12:50:01 »
Hello,

I wanted to buy the Raptor Gaming K1 keyboard but one user has told me that the Cherry G80-1800 keyboard is the same.

My question is whether the Cherry G80-1800LPCDE-0 (light gray) and the Cherry G80-1800LPCDE-2 (black) are the same only the color is different, is that correct?

http://www.cherry.de/english/products/cable_keyboards_G80-1800.htm

thanks for your help!

aloha,
carhartt

Should be both black Cherry keyboards.

Black cherrys aren't particularly nice to type on btw.

The Raptor K1 is claimed to have 30% shorter key travel than normal, and n-key rollover. So no, they aren't exactly the same.

How do they make the key travel 30% shorter on the raptor K1? Boggle. That is an interesting statement especially if it still uses standard MX switches.

What the heck does that mean adjusted coil springs reduces travel by 30%.  How could you do this?  If you use the same casing, same stem, you should have the same distance travel no matter what spring you use.  All cherry switches use springs which are slightly "preloaded" so the stem touches the top of the switch casing at rest.

Now I want to see someone's detailed pictures of the K1 raptor board to see what the deal is..

I mean, we reduced travel by X % by putting in the orthodontic bands but it took the millimeters of travel off the bottom of the switch travel, not the top.

And the topre silent version takes the millimeters off of the top of the switch so that could "reduce spring travel"

Maybe raptor got their marketing executive on loan from Das or something. :P

*edit*
Oooohh I see what is going on here:

Due to their Cherry Gold Crosspoint contacts and the adjusted coil springs, the buttons of the RAPTOR-GAMING K1 offer a very soft and in particular by 30% shorter stroke than conventional keyboards. This feature maximises the entry speed and reactivity while playing – with minimum fatigue by unmatched velocity and reaction advantages.

They probably are saying cherry switches have 30% shorter stroke than dome keyboards.  I think that makes sense if you say millimeters to actuation.  It's a stock g80-1800 I bet with NKRO.

Normally the slider would reach the end of its travel before the spring is fully compressed. In the K1 the springs must fully compress before the normal end of key travel. The switch will activate at the normal point but have less after-travel. If they took the time to make the spring progressive, bottoming out could be made softer.

I'm definitely hoping to snag a K1 some day to try out.

Unless you know that to be explicity the case, I think what it actually means is that the switch actuates sooner than a rubber dome switch.

They are nowhere near identical

Raptor K1 gaming: 2x USB ports on the back (labelled "mouse" and "headset" to fit the gaming scheme), Full N-Key Rollover, MX Brown or MX Black (depending on revision, no way to tell without receiving it), usually double shot or lasered thick keys, includes 8 key stoppers and 8 glow-in-the-dark blue keycaps

G80-1800: no usb ports, 3 key roll over, usually mx black unless special order, usually lasered keys unless special order or vintage

And to clear it up, the Raptor K1 I have does have normal MX blacks. No modified springs, no different plungers.

I can't seem to find it anymore, but there was a Korean or Chinese Cherry site that had a Cherry G80-1800 with the same features.

EDIT:  I forgot, the G80-1863HUMUS-2 has these features.

It appears only the wNv edition has nkey rollover, the normal edition has no nkey rollover.
