So that's really on the level—a left-thumb Backspace? It must've been a custom order for someone who made an unusually large number of typing errors.

No, this is a known thing. It's probably most famous on the IBM M15, but there were also well-known NMB models like these that had it. They always go immediately, as it's a sought-after feature.
Check my keyboard video reviews:

—a left-thumb Backspace?

My late father-in-law was an accountant and split space bar was his preferred keyboard style. I think that they started making them in the mid-late-1990s.
"We are on the precipice of signing an agreement to advance talks with Iran that preserves the good parts of former President Barack Obama’s Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) while amplifying its flaws.
Mr. Obama came to an agreement that did not involve America’s most precious treasure, the lives and limbs of our soldiers.  The 1.7 billion dollars of frozen Iranian assets released by Obama pales in comparison to the 300 billion being floated as a rebuilding fund.
So far, speculation that Iran will be free in the future to continue its nuclear program is the opposite of Trump’s stated goal for the war and in direct opposition to what Mr. Obama negotiated.

So what was the logic behind the thumb-operated BS?

This keyboard would be wasted on Donald Trump, BTW, as he never retracts anything. However, a "blame the fake media" key would be handy.
