Hello from Cincinnati!
« on: Fri, 11 May 2018, 13:42:50 »
I'm 17 years old, live in Cincinnati Ohio, and want to be an electrical, mechanical, or computer engineer

I got into computers about 5 or 6 years ago. First I was reading about gaming laptops, I wanted to get something that would allow me to take Minecraft with me where I wanted to go (Minecraft didn't have the bad rep that it has now), and so that I wasn't limited to playing on my parents' computer, which they needed to use frequently. I am very good at sucking information out of review articles, and other forms of online text-based media, so I would spend a lot of time after school reading about laptops. Eventually, I stumbled across a forum and they said the portability benefit just isn't there given gaming laptops' pathetic battery life, even back then, their incredibly bad performance to dollar, etc. So I started watching videos on youtube about building PC's. Linus Tech Tips, Jayztwocents, Paul's hardware, NCIX tech tips (RIP), hardware Canucks, tek syndicate (crit nowadays), etc, essentially right as these channels started getting big. I learned how easy it is to build a pc, how to differentiate between good and bad components. I also started hearing about mechanical keyboards, which I ended up preferring over the unbelievably bad and bindy Logitech wireless dome board that my parents were using with their pc up until a couple weeks ago.

Nowadays, I'm guilty of being a ryzen fanboy due to my natural tendency to cheer for the underdog, and my contrarian nature. Speaking of this nature, there was something about the light show gaming keyboards I didn't like. Their price maybe? I started researching cheap boards that didn't have rgb. I then stumbled onto Chyro`s 40 dollar mechanical keyboard video, the first video I ever saw about vintage mechanical keyboards, save for the random IBM model M video (I first head about them through tek syndicate a LONG time ago) but they had 2kro, so they were definitely not gaming boards in my eyes. Chyro's videos showed me the much better world of vintage mech boards, and over the past month, I bought and restored a model F (which will become my daily driver for years to come, and I typed this entire post on it, explaining why this post is so long; I freaking love this board), and I bought two zenith boards, and a focus fk-2001.

I also am pretty experienced with manufacturing, at least for my age, given that I'm great friends with a plant manager at Chrysler who knows machining and casting like the back of his hand, I watch a lot of DIY videos on youtube (which also led me to watch the DIY video from chyro), videos about how things are made, and channels like AvE where it's just some guy talking about how things are made and what basic mechanical parts and tools may be better than others. I also like cars, I'm on a robotics team, and I like classic rock.

Long intro, but I like typing on this thing, so I couldn't help it!
My keyboard 'collection': Terrible logitech MK520 wireless rubber dome board (first keyboard I used extensively, unfortunately), a pretty bad navy blue dell l100 with binding issues (I learned how to type on one of the black lubricated ones), an IBM model F I restored that is now my daily driver along with my laptop keyboard, and a very destroyed zenith z-150 with the black badge and alps green.
