Cherry MY isn't that bad!
« on: Mon, 10 September 2018, 06:13:20 »
Hi guys!

My Cherry G81-8000 with Cherry MY switches just arrived, and I have to say - it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I got it new in box for about £3 + £20 shipping, which I was prepared to pay for the nice keycaps. The switches aren't that scratchy, nor do they bind like Chyros demonstrated in his worst switches list. They feel pretty abrasive if you press them off-center, but I don't notice this at all while typing. You can hear the scratchiness a bit, but I don't really care - as the switches sound pretty deep and bassy anyway. Honestly, these aren't that bad at all. Do they get worse with use or something? I think this looks sexy and sounds pretty good. Bear in mind, I'm used to Model F keyboards, so I'm not some Cherry MX Brown lover - I genuinely like these, and I wouldn't mind using them at all.

What do you guys think? Does anyone else own one of these? There are still some on Ebay if anyone's interested.

I've got something strikingly similar at work... it has a smart card reader also though. it's a cherry G81-8040LUVeu-2, called a MultiBoard V2.

I just plugged it in for the first time to use it, and it's unsatisfying to me... requires bottom-out for activation, as it's a hybrid switch. I just finished a teardown of a dell AT101W with some sort of black alps switches though (didn't really need a teardown, but I also lubed/tuned them), and I'm currently loving it, so it might just be my own bias.

The hybrid switches do feel much better than most rubber domes, but it feels like the throw goes on forever... I might just be starting to finally type with a softer touch, but that's certainly the sensation I'm getting from it. I can't plug in my own hardware on a work computer, so I'd be completely all over using it if I didn't have these alps as an alternative.

The Black Alps are definitely more pleasant to use, even if they are the worst of the Alps SKCL/SKCM range. You should try linearising the switches if you haven't already, it makes them even better!

These MY switches don't require you to bottom out, although actuation occurs near the bottom of the travel - which is already very stiff at this point. I'd much prefer to use these over a normal rubber dome because of the distinctive "mechanical" feeling, and the deep sound of the switches. Again, coming from a Model F, this Cherry MY keyboard isn't complete hell like I thought it would be. I think once you get used to the heavy switches, they are not that bad at all!

I Concur... it isn't complete hell, and I would much prefer it to a rubber dome... it is much better, and the sound is good.

I haven't linearized the alps switches yet, but I think I may have an affinity for tactile switches... as I try more and more keebs/switches, I am learning that linears are one of my least favorite, or at least I haven't found any I love yet... I have used a tealio (sample) though, and it is promising enough for me to know I need to order some soon.

Similarly to Alps, the longer you use them or the dirtier they are, the worse they feel. Brand new they feel okay but if you ever try a used board prepare to feel like you are typing on sand.
