Chicony KB 6323
« on: Sat, 08 May 2010, 18:21:33 »
This is the keyboard I am using right now. It's a rubber dome keyboard, but it's very good. I took these pictures after thoroughly cleaning this keyboard and all the keys with a toothbrush.

Boards like the KB-5923 were very popular in about 1996 and still are commonly found on the used market today. Basic little rubber domes that got the job done, nothing fancy.

The underside looks much like the KB-5312. So these have cases made from HIPS (high impact polystyrene), huh?
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

Chicony.  Made a lot of OEM keyboards including some later model IBMs.

Chicony 8923 for example was relabeled by IBM.

They started making them for IBM in 1997; that's the earliest of the KB 8923s I have anyways. Those black ones have one nice logo, damn!

I really think Chicony make some underrated keyboards. Sore, the quality could be better, but they're cheap as chips and can be found anywhere, not to mention the fact that they are a nice feeling keyboard, especially the mechanical models. I have as much fun typing on my 5181 as I do on my Filco with Browns.

I believe Chicony has to be the world's biggest OEM keyboard manufacturer. So they make whatever OEM vendors demand. Back in the days, when they demanded usable keyboards, Chicony made some really fine mechanicals. Later, when vendors startet demanding the cheapest crap they could call a keyboard without getting sued right away, Chicony met that demand as well.

Overall I think Chicony still knows how to make the best out of the two or three bucks per board they're getting paid by vendors. I've seen a lot of outright horrible cheap boards by many different OEM and brand manufacturers. I've yet to see a totally horrible Chicony.
And I do have some respect for that.
Typing on blues.
