Bright LED's In Filco's
« on: Sun, 09 May 2010, 00:03:51 »
Hi,

Would anyone please be able to remind me which switch type (Blue, Brown, Black) on the Filco keyboards has the very bright LED's? I think that one switch type has overly bright LED's?

Yeah - it's the Blue LEDs in the Cherry Brown Filco boards that'll burn a hole through your head if you stare at them.

I remember being surprised at how bright the Green LEDs were when I got my full-size Filco but the Blue LEDs are in another class altogether.

The board I have with Blue LEDs was even marketed as being dimmed after so many complaints (Otaku Tenkeyless White). I'd hate to see how bright they were before they were dimmed.

The infamous and now classic 87-key Filco Zero with the clicky Fukka key switches has the eye damaging bright blue LEDs.  The Filco FKBN22MB numeric keypad also has one blinding blue LED.

I just had some luck using an abrasive fibreglass pencil on an overbright LED on a cheap Keysonic board. The pencil is just the right size for scuffing up the surface of the LED to diffuse the light. It's still too bright, but at least there is now no hot spot above the keyboard where the light hurts my eyes.
Edit> And I guess the roughened surface will be easier to mark with a Sharpie.

Is there a plastic 'lens' over the LED? If so, i've had a lot of success by taking index cards (or some other heavy paper), folding it up several times, and slipping it between the LED itself and the lens.
