Leopold 660C or 660C Silent?
« on: Sat, 04 May 2019, 07:33:31 »
Hello everyone, I'm interested in Topre switches and I'm going to buy A Leopold 660C. They actually make two models: a Silent one and a "non-Silent" one. Which one is better? I'm really uncertain.
I've also heard about the Topre "thock" sound, is it the same in both boards? Thanks for the help!

Silent is the way to go, unless you want your keyboard loud AF.

I would go silent the aftermarket prices are more worth then non silent. And if you don't like silent you can take the sliders out and swap them for normal ones + money. So you get also bit of money back.

Get the silenced version, as others have said they hold a higher aftermarket value & if you don't like the silenced sliders you can most likely trade them for regular non silenced sliders & get a few bucks on top of them. As far as the signature Topre clack goes, Topre's silenced sliders should not change it too much beyond making it quieter. :thumb:

Wow, I had no idea that there was a silent version of the 660C - Cool!  I've got the regular 660C and when I put a dish towel underneath it and try not to pound the keys too hard, it's pretty quiet. I also use several silenced Topre boards, and they are very nice indeed. But sometimes it feels good to go back to non-silenced Topre boards for that extra "snappiness" of the keys. So it's a tough choice and one that is somewhat subjective.

In January, I ordered an FC660C from MK.COM, and it arrived in March, I think.

It was the unsilenced version. Had I known that a silenced version was on the way, I would have waited for it.

The tactility of the 45 gr. 660C was a little more than I desired. I am now told that Leopold's '45 gr' is more like 50. It was also a little louder than expected.

The silenced version would be more desirable. It might lose some tactility, but with Leopold's weighting, that might actually be a good thing.

Ultimately, I sold the 660C. I just didn't need a board that compact. Plus, I prefer the VA68's layout over the FC660.

Now, I have to find a way to get a Realforce R2 PFU edition. True 45 gr silenced is the way to go. But it's 400 USD to import to Canada.

I'd 100% suggest the silenced model, especially given the minimal price difference.

Depends on what you want out of Topre...

I like both silenced and normal and change back and forth between the two.

I haven't tried the silenced 660c but it might make it feel a bit softer (they're really quite stiff compared to a RF and stiffer than HHKB) and the 660c is relatively loud compared to other Topre so that probably helps as well.

Would be interesting to see what they've done there...are they using the longer stems or just rings?

I don’t have a Leopold, but I own a Type Heaven and a Realforce 87U silenced. I prefer the silenced. The rebounce noise in unsilenced is kind of annoying.

But to me there’s no difference in terms of feel.

I'd get silenced in a heartbeat after witnessing how it could possibly be.

Don't want a bunch of clacking waking up everyone in the house when I want to bang out 4000 words out of nowhere. :P
Current driver: HHKB Pro 2 (BKE Ultra Lights), Wooting One w/ Flaretech Red switches and HyperX PBT keycaps.

Other keyboards I own and like: Realforce 87U Variable Weight, Realforce 87U 55g, Niz Plum, Magicforce 108 Gateron Reds w/ O-Rings.

Other keyboards I have: Magicforce 68 Cherry MX Brown, Havit Low-Profile Kailh Blue, Logitech K740,
Yeah, it's a loooooooooooot of keyboards. :P
