Clicky/Tactile switches
« on: Thu, 02 April 2020, 11:56:57 »
Howdy y'all,

I've got plans for a few keyboard builds in the near future and I wanted to know what the current "hot-topic" clicky and tactile switches are.

So far, I've got Linear pretty much covered (got some Gateron blacks and some Tealios on the way) but I don't know much about the other two styles of switch.

I see Holy Pandas get mentioned a lot. Is that because they're good or is that because of some sort of controversy? I think they're tactile (my least favourite switch type) so are there any similar "endgame" style clicky switches out there?

Should probably note, I'm looking for mx compatible.

I'll probably sound like a broken record, but I suggest box jades and navies for clickies. Some people seem to prefer pale blues, and some even pinks, but I think the closest thing to a consensus leads more towards jades for their combination of medium spring weight, smooth travel, and pleasant tactility combined with a satisfyingly bassy click.

I don't know anything about tactiles, because I have never felt one outside of the Alps family that I particularly liked. The Box tactiles are at least not scratchy, and you can perceive a bump instead of just varying degrees of sandpaper, but people have problems with those becoming clicky over time apparently.

It does seem like people tend to lean more towards the more boutique sort of switches for tactiles.

I agree that Box switches - and in particular Box jades - is one of the better clicky switches out there. I've tried both Navy and Jade, and personally found Navy to be too heavy for prolonged use.

Thanks for your response guys.

I'd head of Box Jades but not realised they were clicky.

Just heard a sound test and they sound spot on! Shame I can't seem to find any anywhere :(

For clickies, it really is true that BOX Jades are generally satisfying to many. Definitely should be first on your list.

Other BOX clickies might be more to your preference, such as BOX Whites, Pinks, Pale Blue, and Navy, but you should start with the Jades.

Another clicky that's kind of interesting that people seem to like on blind tests is the Novelkeys Sherbet. But it is less popular than the Jades.

For tactiles, Holy Pandas are beloved because they have a nice, round tactility and a heavy sound. They are fun tactiles, I guess. Tactiles are not the strong suit of MX switches, but you can try out the high-tactility Zealios/Zilents + Durock T1s/Oreos/Crystal Purples, medium OUTEMU Skies and BOX Browns, and lower-tactility Everglide Jades and Kailh Pro Purples. It's highly subjective which is right for you.
