Don't mix Gateron blue stems with Cherry lower housings
« on: Wed, 15 April 2020, 03:20:20 »
I had a pile of Gateron Blues and Cherry MX blacks. I wanted to try blue switches with a 72g spring, so I ended up disassembling both piles of switches, and putting together a frankenswitch with Cherry lowers and Gateron blue stems (I thought the Cherry lowers were superior since they actually have gold crosspoint contacts).

Turns out the Gateron blue stems don't play well with the Cherry lower housings - they appear to work when fine you assemble it together, but once it's in keyboard form and you try to type on it - the Gateron stems seem to catch on the Cherry leaf and create a sharp return-bump, which actually leads to return issues - despite the heavier spring the return was much less forceful than my actual Cherry MX Blues with stock springs.

Now time to desolder 90 keyswitches and swap lowers....

Thank you for doing that, in the name of science. I think you should buy a cheap gk61 kit as test bed for future exploration.
