introductions!
« on: Wed, 22 April 2020, 15:23:31 »
hi all,

Just wanted to finally make an introduction post. I'm somewhat new to the mechanical keyboard community and definitely getting more into it. I've been lurking on here and r/mk for a bit, but thought I'd finally make an account to properly interact with everyone :)

Right now, I have a Vortex POK3R that I'm borrowing for the time being before my Ducky One 2 Full size and a TOFU60 come in. I'm also in the process of building one myself (or at least trying). In regards to keycaps, I recently got the DSA Astrolokeys keycaps, and I'm interested in a few GBs that are going on as well.

Happy to meet ya'll, and excited to participate more.

Welcome to Geekhack erisy.

I don't see any mention of switches. What have you tried? What have you liked?

I've tried Cherry MX browns, which are in the POK3R that I have now. They are okay. My first mechanical keyboard had blues in them, which I liked, but the sound annoyed my roommates.

I really like tactile switches, so I've been reading about different ones. I've seen a lot about zealios ones, and I'm also interested in some Hako switches. I'm looking into getting a switch tester to really know! :)

Okay is better than I would describe Cherry MX brown, lol. I haven't heard anything bad about Zelios V2s, but I don't follow tactiles myself. I use capacitive buckling spring and Alps SKCM blues at work, so people obviously either don't mind, like the sound, or don't care to say anything about it.

Goodluck on the switch tester, especially if you're ordering from China. Shipping is literally hell right now over there. I ordered a switch tester from KPrepublic on January 8th. They told me a few days later that it was out of stock and wouldn't be back in stock for some time. Then Chinese New Year happened ... then Covid. Once it finally did ship, it has just sat in customs purgatory somewhere. It has been 38 days since it shipped, and it is still in China.

I couldn't think of a better way to put it other than okay lol. They are definitely not okay, but they do for the time being. How are buckling spring switches? I've watched a good amount of videos on those and that sound is to die for. I looove how they sound.

Oh yeah, my TOFU60 has been delayed for a bit but it's finally coming in. At least, it states it is coming in. Shipping for it hasn't been updated. That is crazy long though, hopefully it comes sooner rather than later!

So you were just putting it nicely. DALExSNAIL will appreciate that, and some others. Cherry browns do seem to be loved by some.

That depends on which buckling springs you mean. I love capacitive buckling spring, found in Model F keyboards. I'm not a big fan of the membrane type found in Model Ms. Membrane is stiffer, less consistent, less smooth, and less invincible. In spite of this, some people do seem to prefer membrane, though most agree that capacitive is better in every way.

I have noticed that, sometimes, the Chinese tracking will stop updating once an item has left China. Sometimes they'll provide a USPS tracking number to try to use with any tool that supports USPS, and sometimes I have had to use the original Chinese tracking number in the USPS tracking tool. Even if it is still stuck in China, USPS will usually say something to that effect.

I'm not betting on it getting here any time soon, assuming that it hasn't been lost. KPrepublic had some recent updates that said that packages were basically sitting around in airports because of the reduced number of flights taking off right now.
