Help troubleshooting RGB LED?
« on: Wed, 22 April 2020, 01:47:32 »
I honestly would appreciate any ideas troubleshooting an RGB LED before I open the case. It is functioning but it is acting up. Turning the wrong colors and such. I figured it was a bad LED. However if I pound on the key it will often "reset" itself to the correct color. Or turn if off ETC. It is through hole 3MM. What do you guy's think the chances are that it is just the solder and not a bad LED? If it is a bad LED does anyone know where I can source these? Someone pointed me to 5MM LED's but I would prefer the 3MM one if possible. Thank you

My guess is solder joints. I would just slap some flux on there, reflow them quick, and test.

My Aliexpress link was for 3mm through hole LEDs, at least according to the product page. I couldn't find them anywhere else offhand. Maybe digikey?

I wouldn't thank me just yet. I'm an IT tech, I know literally every obvious solution can fail. I do wish you luck though. Hopefully it just needs a good reflow, and if not, hopefully those Aliexpress LEDs are the same spec. You know how ordering anything from China can be.

Yeah China is rough LOL. I am an Electronic/software Engineer. Have MIT and Harvard PHD's. Not bragging just saying i know stuff too. that was why I was saying I was "honestly" asking for help because those that know me here might have thought I was joking. That is the only reason I am telling you that. Normally I do not speak of that because I know it can be upsetting to people. I think everyone here is very cool. We are all Geeks. I am a huge nerd, trust me. I only have like 3 friends. Most people never understood me outside of Fraternity.

All I meant by mentioning my profession is that I'm used to suggesting that somebody try XYZ, and it may still may not be just the thing that they need.

What can be upsetting to people? Friends are overrated. Most are only around when they need something, and a lot seem pretty needy for attention. Personally, I would rather sit alone in a dark room anyway.

That is why I would rather have 3 very close ones than 200 I barely know! I mentioned my profession(retired) and credentials for the same reason. I never made much but I have personally lost companies millions. Well I know it is that LED one way or the other :) I ordered some. If I ever get them is another story... I am glad you found that though. Thank you
