Hi GeekHack

Hello Everyone,

I have been a long time lurking and ever since the pandemic, I've been digging deeper and deeper into the mechanical keyboard world. I am totally new to the custom keyboard world and I am trying to learn more about it so I can build my first keyboard. I am currently using the ducky one 2 mini with blue switches. Glad to have found this place where so many people share the same hobby!

Hi unsuredreamz. Welcome to Geekhack.

I lurked for years before I joined myself.

Have you tried any other switches? Do you feel that you prefer clickies over other types?

I have tried red and brown switches. I didn't really enjoy the feeling of those but, I am open to trying new switches. So far on my list I would like to experiment with holy pandas, zealios 67g and some alpacas! What are some of your favorite switches?

I would agree. MX reds and browns aren't that special. Nothing in the MX line that I have tried is to me, although their linears are acceptable. So it sounds like you're definitely giving tactiles and linears a shot. I haven't tried any of those 3 switches, since my own focus is on clickies, new an old. I should try more of the boutique switches though. Of modern switches, I currently like Kailh box jades and navies the most. Overall, I like Alps SKCM blues and capacitive buckling spring, with the box switches following closely behind.

Clickies are what made me like mechanical keyboards aha. Every time I hear about clicky switches, everyone always loves or recommends the box jades or Alps SKCM blues. I heard the Alps SKCM blues are quite rare too? correct me if I am wrong please. :)

SKCM blues were made in a very specific window of time. They were basically Alps' main clicky during the late 80s and were replaced by SKCM whites. This was an iterative transition, so the early whites are very similar to late blues, and the earlier of either is considered better than later. Blues are very coveted, and valuable as a result. I don't know that they're necessarily extremely rare, it is just that people hoard them, and they certainly didn't have a very long production run.

IBM's capacitive buckling spring keyboards (Model Fs) are right up there with SKCM blues as well. Very smooth, crisp, and satisfying.

box jades are the closest modern equivalents that I have found to SKCM blue. They're not as smooth, their tactility not as refined, but they're still great, and bassy too, which you don't really see in many clickies other than Alps SKCM, new or old.
