Swiss newbie here!
« on: Tue, 05 May 2020, 12:40:39 »
Hey peeps,

I've been using keyboards for the past 20 years and I'm just now wondering about the marvels this interface could hide!

FYI I'm typing on a boring K70 Rapidfire atm (cherry mx speed) and I'm getting a bit annoyed by the noise and the occasionnal accidental keypress.

Just ordered myself an iGk61 with Gateron blacks to test the thing out and have a testbed to explore my tastes in switches, keycaps and other joys of the hobby.

For now, the main fear/question I have is the apparent pain and difficulty of navigating the world of mechs with an ISO swiss layout as a requirement.

Would any of you have suggestions for good buys (keyboards or even just PCBs and keycaps) with a swiss layout?

Thanks for building an apparently great community and I'll see you around!

Hey peeps,

Hi Red392. Welcome to Geekhack.

FYI I'm typing on a boring K70 Rapidfire atm (cherry mx speed) and I'm getting a bit annoyed by the noise and the occasionnal accidental keypress.

I love the K70, all indications are that I would not like to type with MX speed though. I'm sorry to hear you ended up with those switches. I find the reds in my main K70 to already be too sensitive.

Just ordered myself an iGk61 with Gateron blacks to test the thing out and have a testbed to explore my tastes in switches, keycaps and other joys of the hobby.

I haven't typed with the Gaterons in a board myself, and they're lighter than Cherry blacks, but I have found that with Cherry blacks, I get fatigued pretty easy, as they're pretty stiff springs. I can use even heavier clickies and not mind so much. Maybe that wouldn't be the case with the Gaterons, but I think I might lean more towards the yellows myself if I were gong with linear Gaterons, for gaming anyway. I'm saying this being used to relatively stiff clickies. I think you'll like how smooth and refined any of the Gaterons are compared to the Cherries you've got, except for the browns. Apparently not even Gateron can make browns feel good. That board's probably a great starter board for testing things. I should have gotten a hot swap board a long time ago, and it is probably a better overall board than the stupid Ajazz AK33 I wasted money on.

For now, the main fear/question I have is the apparent pain and difficulty of navigating the world of mechs with an ISO swiss layout as a requirement.

Would any of you have suggestions for good buys (keyboards or even just PCBs and keycaps) with a swiss layout?

I think ISO is pretty well-supported by custom/diy boards, if maybe not so much by OEMs. QWERTZ caps might be a problem, but there seem to be a lot of users on here from Germanic countries that might know some good sources if you look/ask in the Keyboard Keycaps section.

Wow thanks a lot for the considerate answer, colour me impressed!
I'm anxious to try new switches since I have so little experience and your indications make me all the more impatient!

I'll be happy to report as soon as can get some action with the new board, happy to see you think it's a good start :D

Have a nice rest of the week!

You're welcome, any time.

I know exactly what you mean. Whenever I'm anticipating something, I try to forget about it entirely. It makes it all of the better when something releases/arrives out of the blue when you're not expecting it.

I would sure be interested in what you find. I have been thinking about possibly replacing the MX reds in my gaming board myself, I just haven't gotten the motivation and/or entirely decided on a replacement switch.

Thank you very much. You as well.
