Unicomp vs Filco
« on: Sun, 04 July 2010, 10:28:39 »
Hey everyone! Ive been a long time lurker of these forums, but this is my first time posting, and i have a question to ask you.

I plan on purchasing my first mechanical switch. However, I am somewhat undecided about which of the aformentioned keyboards is worth my hard earned money.  I know, I know, there are tons of "BS vs MX blue" threads out there, but after viewing a lot of them, I am still somewhat worried about purchasing one or the other. As I've never tried either switch, I need a professional opinion on which to buy.

Now, as I'm still 13, money doesn't exactly grow on trees for me. I obviously prefer the Unicomp just from a price/performance standpoint. However, after reading some Filco reviews, I'm starting to wonder whether paying the extra bucks for the Filco is actually worth it.

Keep in mind, that this purchase should last me for years. It was extremely difficult justifying either of these purchases to my dad (who doesn't let me "waste" my money, especially in economic times like these), and I don't plan on going through that again just so i can try the switch that i didn't buy.

I'd like a switch thats good for gaming, and for typing, if thats possible. Noise is kind of an issue as well. I wake up HOURS before my parents and little brother just so i can game a bit before starting the day, but i keep the doors to my room closed. Will the sound from the blues/buckling springs leak through the doors? Because i can imagine me returning my keyboard because my keyboard waking up my parents up every morning.

I'd love to hear responses from you guys, because this apple "chick let" keyboard I'm using, frankly, sucks donkey balls.

I think that as far as Cherry switches are concerned, the popular opinion on this board is that browns are the best "compromise" switch for gaming and typing - and quite a few people prefer browns to blues for typing anyway. They're also quiet. But I'm not a gamer and I don't have any cherry boards, so take it with a grain of salt.

Buckling spring boards are not quiet at all, and rollover is minimal for Model M type boards. For typing it usually doesn't matter - unless you're using some non-standard key layout with different modifiers - but for gaming that may be a big issue.

So; unicomp boards are cheap compared to filcos, but I don't think I'd really recommend them for your use. You may want to consider a cheaper Cherry brown board from some other manufacturer if price is an issue.

Also wrt to price: both Model M and generic Cherry boards are relatively easy to get second hand on ebay in the US, and the Model M at least will last long enough that second hand boards are a completely valid option.
